Day 2, Iconic sights

Base: Pto. Varas Alto, The hillside residential area above town with sweeping lake and volcano views, quieter and more local.

Morning: Kayak on Lake Llanquihue. The lake is calm in the mornings, with mirror reflections of Osorno and Calbuco. Rentals and guided trips leave from the waterfront.

Evening: Petrohué Waterfalls and Saltos del Río Petrohué. Turquoise waterfalls cascading through volcanic rock in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. A 45-minute drive from town.

Day 3, Food & markets

Base: Ensenada, A tiny village 40 minutes east at the base of Osorno volcano, the gateway to Petrohué waterfalls and Vicente Pérez Rosales.

Morning: Eat kuchen at Café Danés or Schopato. German-Chilean fruit tarts made with local berries and apples, served with strong Chilean coffee. An essential Puerto Varas ritual.

Afternoon: Explore Ensenada, A tiny village 40 minutes east at the base of Osorno volcano, the gateway to Petrohué waterfalls and Vicente Pérez Rosales.

Evening: Road trip to Frutillar and Llanquihue. Two smaller German towns on the lake's northern shore with music halls, rose gardens and even better lake views.

Day 4, Local neighbourhoods

Morning: Day trip to Petrohué and Osorno. Visit the turquoise Petrohué waterfalls and ride toward Osorno volcano for hiking or skiing, set in the lush Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.

Getting around

Puerto Varas is walkable but you'll want a car or tour for the national parks. The town has a bus terminal with connections to Puerto Montt, Bariloche (Argentina) and Santiago. The Aeropuerto El Tepual in Puerto Montt is 25 minutes away. The famous Cruce Andino lake crossing to Bariloche departs from Petrohué. Taxis and colectivos are available for local trips.

Safety

Puerto Varas is very safe, one of Chile's most secure tourist towns. The main risks are weather-related: conditions change fast in the mountains, and volcano hikes require guides and proper gear. Always check avalanche and weather reports before climbing.
