Day 1, Get oriented

Base: The Rocks & Circular Quay, Historic pubs, weekend markets, the harbour's front door.

Morning: Climb or kayak around the Harbour. The BridgeClimb up the Harbour Bridge arch is iconic, but a sunrise kayak under it is cheaper and just as memorable. Either way you get the Opera House and harbour from an angle most miss.

Afternoon: Explore The Rocks & Circular Quay, Historic pubs, weekend markets, the harbour's front door.

Evening: Sunset at Mrs Macquarie's Chair. The classic Opera House + Harbour Bridge photo spot. Best light at golden hour.

Eat: Flat white at any specialty café (Paramount Coffee Project, Single O)

Day 2, Iconic sights

Base: Bondi, The famous beach, coastal walk start, health-conscious cafés.

Morning: Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. 6km of cliffs, beaches, and ocean pools. Start at Bronte for fewer crowds, end at Coogee for a swim.

Afternoon: Explore Bondi, The famous beach, coastal walk start, health-conscious cafés.

Evening: Ferry to Manly. The best $10 you'll spend. The harbour views from the water are unmatched.

Eat: Fresh seafood at the Sydney Fish Market

Day 3, Local neighbourhoods

Base: Surry Hills & Darlinghurst, Sydney's creative core. Best restaurants, small bars, boutique shopping.

Morning: Sydney Opera House backstage tour. Better than the standard tour. See the theatres, the studios, the engineering.

Evening: Wendy's Secret Garden in Lavender Bay - a hidden harbour-side garden created by one woman over 20 years.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Modern Australian at Nomad or Restaurant Plage

Day 4, Day trip or nature

Base: Newtown, Alternative, multicultural, vintage shops, live music, great cheap eats.

Morning: Cockatoo Island - a UNESCO convict site in the middle of the harbour, camping allowed.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Afternoon: Explore Newtown, Alternative, multicultural, vintage shops, live music, great cheap eats.

Evening: Gordon's Bay - a snorkelling spot between Coogee and Clovelly, locals only.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Cheap and excellent Thai at Spice Alley in Kensington Street

Day 5, Slow finish

Base: Manly, The beach suburb across the harbour. Surf, snorkelling, a slower pace.

Morning: The Grounds of Alexandria - a café complex in a former industrial precinct, constantly redecorated.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Afternoon: Explore Manly, The beach suburb across the harbour. Surf, snorkelling, a slower pace.

Evening: Dinner at Flat white at any specialty café (Paramount Coffee Project, Single O), then a quiet drink wherever the locals are in Manly.

Getting around

Get an Opal card. Ferries, trains, buses all use it. The harbour ferry is the most scenic transit in the world. Uber is reliable but the train is often faster across the bridge.

Safety

Extremely safe. Standard big-city awareness. Strong rip currents at ocean beaches - swim between the flags. Solo travellers, including women, feel comfortable everywhere day and night.
