Getting around
High-speed rail from Taipei takes about 1h45 to Tainan HSR station in Guiren, with a shuttle train to the centre in 20 minutes; regular TRA trains stop right downtown. The old town is flat and walkable, and city buses reach Anping in 20 to 30 minutes with EasyCard. Renting a scooter or a YouBike is how locals do it, and Kaohsiung is only 30 to 40 minutes away by train.
Safety
Tainan is very safe, with the main risk being scooter traffic at intersections, so look twice before crossing. Summer from June to September is hot, humid and the typhoon window, when heavy rain can flood low streets. Many famous food stalls take cash only and close by mid-afternoon or on rotating rest days, so carry NT$ and check hours. Tap water should be boiled, which every hotel provides.
