Getting around
Tamarindo town is small and walkable, with the beach, restaurants and bars all close together, so you can manage on foot for the centre. For nearby beaches and day trips you'll want wheels: renting a car or ATV is popular and gives flexibility on Guanacaste's roads, some of which are unpaved. Taxis are available locally, and shuttles connect to other beach towns and to Liberia. To arrive, most travellers fly into Liberia (Daniel Oduber) International Airport, about 1 to 1.5 hours away, then take a shuttle, rental car or private transfer; San José is around four to five hours by road.
Safety
Tamarindo is generally safe and very used to tourists, with solo travellers, including women, commonly feeling comfortable. Its popularity does bring petty theft, so don't leave belongings unattended on the beach, secure valuables, and stay aware in busy nightlife areas late at night. The biggest natural risk is the ocean: respect rip currents, swim where it's safer, and only surf within your ability, ask locals or instructors about conditions. Watch for crocodiles in the estuary (don't swim there), use licensed tour operators, stay hydrated and use sun protection. Standard nightlife precautions apply.
