Getting around

Tampa is fairly spread out, so a rental car is the most convenient way to get around, especially for beach day trips to Clearwater and St. Pete. Downtown, the Riverwalk and Ybor City are walkable, and the free TECO streetcar links downtown, Channelside and Ybor City, which is handy. Rideshare is widely available, but for exploring the wider area and the Gulf beaches, a car gives the most flexibility.

Safety

Tampa is generally safe in its main tourist areas like the Riverwalk, Ybor City, Hyde Park and the beaches, with normal big-city caution advised. Ybor City gets lively at night, so keep your wits and belongings close. Protect against the strong Florida sun, stay hydrated, watch ocean conditions at the Gulf beaches, and note that hurricane season runs June to November.
