  • The Atatürk Museum in the house where the founder of modern Turkey was born.

  • The Bey Hamam Ottoman baths on Egnatia Street.
  • Sunset from the Trigoniou Tower on the Ano Poli ramparts.

Getting around

Central Thessaloniki is compact and walkable, with most sights along the flat waterfront and around the markets, though the Ano Poli involves steep climbs. A long-awaited metro line plus an extensive city bus network cover the wider city, and taxis are plentiful and affordable. The airport is a short bus or taxi ride from the centre. For day trips to Halkidiki, Meteora, Mount Olympus or Vergina, intercity buses (KTEL) and trains run from the city, though a rental car gives more flexibility for the beaches.

Safety

Thessaloniki is a generally safe, friendly city and comfortable for solo travellers, including women, day and night. The main concerns are petty pilfering and pickpocketing in crowded markets, on busy buses and around nightlife areas, so keep an eye on your belongings. The lively student and bar scene is welcoming but can get rowdy late at night in districts like Valaoritou. Occasional demonstrations occur in the centre; they're usually peaceful but best avoided. Standard city precautions are all that's needed here.
