Hidden gems

  • Subak Juwuk Manis path, a short green walk starting behind Jalan Bisma
  • Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu, a water temple far calmer than Tirta Empul
  • Threads of Life textile gallery for the story behind Indonesian weaving
  • Sari Organik walk through working fields to a rice-paddy cafe

Getting around

Ubud's centre is walkable but the footpaths are broken and traffic is heavy. Grab and Gojek work with occasional local restrictions near the market, and scooter rental at around $5 a day is the standard choice for reaching terraces and temples. A driver for a full day of sights costs about $40 to $50.

Safety

Ubud is very safe for solo travellers, including women. The real risks are scooter accidents on wet roads, the monkeys in the Sacred Forest which will grab sunglasses and bags, and steep unlit paths at night. Carry a torch and keep loose items zipped away near the temple.
