Getting around

Curaçao International Airport is about 15 minutes from Willemstad. The city centre is walkable, linked by the free Queen Emma pedestrian bridge and a free ferry when it's open for ships. Public Konvoi buses are cheap but infrequent. Renting a car is the best way to reach the west-coast beaches and dive sites, as taxis are pricey and unmetered. Driving is on the right. The island is compact, so drives are short.

Safety

Curaçao is one of the safer Caribbean islands, and Willemstad's tourist districts are generally safe by day and in the lively Pietermaai area at night. Petty theft can occur, so secure valuables and avoid quiet, unlit streets after dark. Watch for currents at the wilder beaches and dive within your limits. The island sits outside the hurricane belt. Tap water is safe and among the best in the Caribbean.
