Hidden gems
- Yangjiajie's Natural Wall ridge trail, where few tourists venture past the gate
- Ten Mile Gallery's small train compared with the free walking path beside it
- Baofeng Lake's quiet morning boat cruise beneath sheer cliffs
- The old Tujia stilt houses at the entrance of the park's east gate
Getting around
Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport is 5 kilometres from the city center; the park is a 40 minute, 12 to 20 yuan bus or 60 yuan taxi ride from town. Inside the park, free shuttle buses link the five zones, and cable cars or the Bailong Elevator cost extra. Tianmen Mountain's cable car starts in the city center, so you can sightsee without a car at all.
Safety
Zhangjiajie is safe; the main hazards are weather and terrain. Paths get slick in rain and fog, glass walkways require shoe covers and no drones, and wild macaques snatch bags and food, so keep them zipped. Crowds at national holidays (early October, early May) are extreme; avoid those weeks if you can.
