Boise, United States: Guia de viagem

Riverside mountain-town capital with a greenbelt, foothill trails and Basque heritage.

  • Melhor época: May-June and September-October
  • Orçamento diário: $130 to $250 USD
  • Duração ideal: 3 to 4 days

Boise is the rare state capital where you can finish a downtown lunch and be on a singletrack trail within 15 minutes. The Boise River runs straight through, lined by a 25-mile greenbelt, and the Ridge to Rivers network puts 190 miles of foothill trails on the city's northern edge. Downtown holds the only Basque Block in the United States, a legacy of Basque sheepherders, plus a food and brewery scene that has quietly gotten very good.

Como se deslocar

Downtown, the Basque Block and the greenbelt are walkable and bike-friendly, with a bike-share network covering the core. A car is worth having for trailheads, Bogus Basin and day trips. Boise Airport is remarkably close, 10 minutes and about $15 to $20 by rideshare from downtown. Parking downtown is cheap, with the first hour free in most garages.

Segurança

Boise regularly rates among the safest mid-size US cities, and downtown and the North End are comfortable at all hours. The risks are outdoors: high desert sun and dry heat above 35C in July, rattlesnakes and ticks on foothill trails, and cold, fast water in the Boise River early in the season. Wildfire smoke can degrade air quality in late summer, so check air quality before long hikes.

Perguntas frequentes

How many days do you need in Boise?

Three to four. One day downtown for the capitol, Basque Block and Old Idaho Penitentiary, one for foothill trails or Table Rock, one for the river float or greenbelt, and a fourth for a day trip to Sun Valley, Craters of the Moon or the Snake River wineries.

When is the best time to visit Boise?

May to June and September to October, when it is 20-28C, the trails are dry and the light is best. July and August hit 35C but are the only window for the river float. Winter is cold and dry with skiing at Bogus Basin 45 minutes away.

Is Boise expensive?

Moderate at $130 to $250 a day. Hotels run $140 to $230, meals are reasonable, and the best activities, hiking the foothills, walking the greenbelt and touring the capitol, are free. Costs have climbed with the city's growth but still trail Denver or Salt Lake City.

Is Boise safe for tourists?

Very. It ranks among the safest cities of its size in the US, and downtown, the North End and the greenbelt feel comfortable day and night. Outdoor hazards matter more: dry heat, rattlesnakes on foothill trails, cold spring river water and late-summer wildfire smoke.

Can you float the Boise River?

Yes, from roughly late June to Labor Day when flows are safe. The standard six-mile drift runs from Barber Park to Ann Morrison Park over two to three hours, with tube rentals at Barber and a shuttle back. Check the daily flow status before going, as the season can open late.

What is the Basque Block?

A single downtown block that is the centre of the largest Basque community in the United States, descended from 19th-century sheepherders. It holds the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, the 1864 Cyrus Jacobs-Uberuaga boarding house, restaurants and a July festival called Jaialdi held every five years.

What is Boise known for?

Foothill trails minutes from downtown, the Boise River greenbelt and summer float, the only Basque Block in the US, the blue football field at Boise State, a geothermally heated capitol, and being one of the fastest-growing and safest cities in the country.
