Canberra is Australia's purpose-built capital, a green, spacious city designed around Lake Burley Griffin and ringed by bushland hills. It is the country's cultural heavyweight, home to the national museums, galleries and Parliament House, almost all of them free, plus a surprisingly good food, wine and festival scene. Autumn colour, spring tulips at Floriade and crisp blue-sky days make it a rewarding short break. Como se deslocar

A light-rail line links Gungahlin to the city, and buses cover the rest, but Canberra is spread out and a hire car or ride-share makes the museums and outer attractions far easier. The lakeside cycling paths are excellent. The airport is about 15 minutes from the centre.

Segurança

Canberra is one of Australia's safest cities, with very low crime and easy navigation. Winters (June to August) are genuinely cold with frosts, so pack warm layers. Summer can bring high heat and occasional bushfire smoke. Distances between sights are larger than they look, so plan transport ahead.

Perguntas frequentes

How many days do you need in Canberra?

Two to three days is enough to see the headline museums and galleries, Parliament House, the War Memorial and Lake Burley Griffin. Add a fourth day if you want to visit the wineries, the National Arboretum or Tidbinbilla nature reserve, or to time your trip with Floriade or an autumn-colour walk.

Is Canberra worth visiting?

Yes, especially for culture lovers: it has the country's best collection of national museums and galleries, almost all free, plus the moving Australian War Memorial and Parliament House. Add a green, walkable lakeside setting, a strong food and wine scene in Braddon and Kingston, and seasonal events like Floriade.

When is the best time to visit Canberra?

Autumn (March to May) brings spectacular leaf colour and crisp, clear days, while spring (September to November) delivers blossoms and the Floriade flower festival. Both are ideal. Winter is cold and frosty but atmospheric, and summer is warm but can bring heat and bushfire smoke.

Are Canberra's museums free?

Most are: the National Gallery of Australia, National Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Australian War Memorial, Questacon (small fee) and Parliament House are free to enter, though special exhibitions sometimes charge. This makes Canberra one of the best-value cultural city breaks in the country for families and budget travellers alike.

Do you need a car in Canberra?

It helps a lot. The city is spread across distinct districts and, while there is a light-rail line and buses, a hire car or ride-share makes reaching the museums, lookouts, wineries and nature reserves far quicker. The lakeside cycling and walking paths are excellent for getting around the central attractions.

What is Canberra known for?

Canberra is known as Australia's planned capital city: the seat of federal government, home to Parliament House and the nation's leading museums and galleries. It is also famous for Lake Burley Griffin, the Floriade spring flower festival, brilliant autumn colour and a green, spacious layout designed by Walter Burley Griffin.

Is Canberra a good day trip from Sydney?

It is about a three-hour drive or four-hour bus or train ride from Sydney, so a day trip is possible but rushed. To do the museums and galleries justice, stay at least one or two nights. Many travellers combine Canberra with the Southern Highlands or the south-coast beaches on a longer road trip.
