Segurança

Darwin is generally safe, but the Top End is croc country; never swim in rivers, estuaries or unmarked waterholes, and obey all crocodile warning signs. The tropical sun and humidity are intense, so hydrate and cover up. The wet season (Nov to Apr) brings monsoonal rain, flooding and marine stingers.

Perguntas frequentes

How many days do you need in Darwin?

Four to six days lets you enjoy the city's markets and waterfront, plus day or overnight trips to Litchfield and Kakadu national parks. Litchfield is an easy day trip, but Kakadu deserves at least one or two nights to do it justice, so build extra time around it.

When is the best time to visit Darwin?

The dry season, May to September, is by far the best time: warm, sunny days, low humidity, accessible waterfalls and the famous sunset markets in full swing. The wet season (November to April) brings dramatic storms, flooding and closed roads, though the waterfalls run at their fullest.

Is it safe to swim around Darwin?

Not in the wild waterways: the Top End is saltwater crocodile country, and rivers, estuaries and unmarked billabongs can be deadly. Swim only where it is signed safe: the Waterfront wave lagoon, designated plunge pools in Litchfield, and thermal springs like Berry Springs when open. Always heed croc warning signs.

Can you visit Kakadu from Darwin?

Yes, Kakadu's western edge is about a 2.5-hour drive from Darwin, and it is the region's headline attraction. You can do a long day trip, but staying one or two nights lets you see the rock art at Ubirr and Nourlangie, cruise Yellow Water and reach the waterfalls properly. A hire car or guided tour is essential.

Do you need a car in Darwin?

For the city itself, no: the centre is walkable with a free loop bus and regular services. But to reach Litchfield, Kakadu and the swimming holes you will need a hire car, as public transport does not serve them. For Kakadu's unsealed tracks, a 4WD is recommended in parts.

What is Darwin known for?

Darwin is known for its tropical frontier feel, multicultural food markets, spectacular sea sunsets and its role as the gateway to the Top End: Kakadu, Litchfield, Arnhem Land and saltwater crocodiles. It is also steeped in WWII history, having been bombed in 1942, with bunkers and memorials around the city.

Is Darwin expensive to visit?

Darwin is moderately priced: cheaper than Sydney for dining thanks to its market food scene, but car hire, tours and remote fuel can add up given the distances to the national parks. Visiting in the dry season is pricier and busier; the build-up and wet season offer lower rates if you can handle the humidity.
