Essaouira, Morocco: Guia de viagem
The windy city: Atlantic ramparts, a blue-and-white medina, gulls and gnaoua, and Morocco's most relaxed coast.
- Melhor época: April-June, September-November
- Orçamento diário: $55 to $110 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 to 3 days
Essaouira is Morocco at its most laid-back: an 18th-century walled port where the Atlantic slams against honey-coloured ramparts, blue fishing boats crowd the harbour, and gnaoua music drifts out of the medina's workshops. The constant trade wind keeps temperatures gentle and fills the bay with windsurfers and kitesurfers. It's the perfect antidote to Marrakech's intensity, three hours west.
Bairros
- The Medina: A UNESCO-listed walled old town of whitewashed lanes, galleries and riad hotels.
- Skala de la Ville: The sea-battered ramparts with brass cannons and sunset views.
- The Port & Fish Market: Blue boats, gulls and open-air grills serving the morning's catch.
- The Beach & Bay: A long sandy arc of kitesurfing, camel rides and sunset football games.
- Diabate & the Dunes: South of the river, Jimi Hendrix legends, surf shacks and wild beach.
O que fazer
- Walk the Skala ramparts: Trace the cannon-lined walls as waves crash below and gulls wheel overhead.
- Lunch at the port grills: Pick your fish, prawns and calamari from the stalls and eat it grilled steps from the boats.
- Get lost in the medina: Browse thuya-wood workshops, argan cooperatives and tiny contemporary galleries.
- Kitesurf or ride the bay: Learn to kitesurf in one of Africa's best spots, or take a camel along the sand at dusk.
Segredos escondidos
- The ruined Borj El Berod watchtower in the dunes south of Diabate.
- Sunset gnaoua sessions in the medina's small music bars.
- The spice square and its hole-in-the-wall tea stalls.
- Day trip to an argan oil cooperative run by local women on the Marrakech road.
O que comer
- Grilled sardines and calamari at the port stalls
- Seafood pastilla, sweet-savoury pastry with shellfish
- Fresh oysters from Oualidia on a coastal day trip
- Msemen and mint tea in the medina's back-street cafes
Como se deslocar
Essaouira's medina is car-free and walkable end to end in 20 minutes; petit taxis cover the beach strip and Diabate cheaply. Supratours and CTM buses connect to Marrakech in about 3 hours and Agadir in 2.5. Essaouira-Mogador airport has seasonal European flights, and rental cars make sense for the argan country and Paradise Valley day trips.
Segurança
Essaouira is one of Morocco's safest and most relaxed towns; the main annoyances are mild hassling in the souks and persistent gull-and-cat chaos near the port. The Atlantic is powerful, so swim between the lifeguard flags and respect kitesurf zones. Dress is more liberal than inland cities, but shoulders and knees covered keep attention down in the medina.
Perguntas frequentes
Is Essaouira worth visiting?
Absolutely. It offers a UNESCO-listed medina, dramatic sea ramparts, superb seafood and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere that most of inland Morocco can't match. Two to three days is ideal, and it pairs perfectly with Marrakech.
How many days do you need in Essaouira?
Two to three days. One day covers the medina, ramparts and port grills, a second allows kitesurfing, the beach and galleries, and a third opens up argan cooperatives, Paradise Valley or a slow second medina day. It's also an easy overnight from Marrakech.
How do you get from Marrakech to Essaouira?
Supratours and CTM buses run roughly every 1 to 2 hours and take about 3 hours, costing around 80 to 100 dirhams. Private grand taxis and transfers take 2.5 hours door to door. There's no train line to Essaouira.
When is the best time to visit Essaouira?
April to June and September to November, with temperatures of 20 to 26°C and strong but manageable trade winds. Summer is cool by Moroccan standards thanks to the wind, which is exactly why kitesurfers come, but the beach can be blustery. The Gnaoua World Music Festival fills the town in late June.
Is Essaouira good for kitesurfing?
Yes, it's one of Africa's premier kitesurfing and windsurfing spots, with reliable trade winds from April to September and a huge sandy bay. Numerous schools offer beginner lessons and gear rental, and the main beach is shared safely with swimmers and camels.
Can you swim in Essaouira?
Yes, at the main town beach, which is sheltered by the bay and patrolled in season. The wind and waves suit bodyboarding more than floating, and the water stays cool year-round at 17 to 20°C. Avoid swimming near the port or outside flagged zones.
Is Essaouira expensive?
No. Budget $55 to $110 a day. A port grill lunch runs 60 to 100 dirhams, riad doubles from around 300 to 900 dirhams, medina meals 40 to 120 dirhams and kitesurf lessons roughly 600 dirhams. It's noticeably cheaper than Marrakech's tourist core.
