Guangzhou, China: Guia de viagem
The Cantonese food capital: dim sum mornings, Pearl River nights and China's oldest trading port city.
- Melhor época: October-December
- Orçamento diário: $45 to $120 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 to 3 days
Guangzhou is where Cantonese food was invented and where it's still best: morning tea trolleys, roast goose, wonton noodles and late-night hotpot. Around the eating there's a serious city of colonial Shamian Island, Qing-era ancestral halls and a river skyline of neon towers. Joy Plus plans it as a food city first.
Bairros
- Yuexiu (Old City): Beijing Road, temples, Yuexiu Park and the densest old-school restaurants.
- Shamian Island: A leafy sandbank of European colonial buildings, cafes and wedding photoshoots.
- Tianhe & Zhujiang New Town: Skyscrapers, opera house, malls and the Canton Tower across the river.
- Liwan: Xiguan mansions, Shangxiajiu pedestrian street and traditional snack shops.
- Haizhu: Riverside wetlands, quieter stays and good access to both banks.
O que fazer
- Yum cha at a classic teahouse: Morning dim sum at Panxi or Guangzhou Restaurant, ideally before 10am with tea and trolleys.
- Chen Clan Ancestral Hall: Nineteenth-century academy dense with wood, brick and ceramic-ridge carving.
- Shamian Island walk: Banyan-lined lanes of former consulates and trading houses, best late afternoon.
- Canton Tower and the Pearl River lights: A 600-metre observation tower, or the cheaper night cruise below it.
Segredos escondidos
- Bright Filial Piety Temple's ancient banyans, older than the city's imperial walls.
- Yongqingfang, restored Xiguan lanes with Bruce Lee's ancestral house and indie cafes.
- Qingping Market's herbal medicine stalls, a wall of dried everything.
- Baiyun Mountain at dawn, where locals sing, spar and exercise above the smog line.
O que comer
- Har gow, siu mai and cheung fun at morning yum cha
- Roast goose with plum sauce from a Cantonese barbecue shop
- Wonton noodle soup with springy bamboo-pressed noodles
- Double-boiled soups and late-night congee
Como se deslocar
Baiyun International Airport is 28 km north with a direct metro line to the centre in about 45 minutes. The metro is huge, cheap and signed in English. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before arriving, as cash is barely used, and download offline maps plus a VPN if you rely on Google services.
Segurança
Guangzhou is very safe, with low violent crime and heavy CCTV coverage; the main annoyances are pickpockets around Guangzhou Railway Station and crowded markets. Summer is hot and humid with typhoon risk from July to September. Many China visits are visa-free for short stays under current transit and unilateral schemes, but confirm the rules for your passport before booking.
Perguntas frequentes
Is Guangzhou worth visiting?
Yes, above all for food. It's the home of Cantonese cooking and dim sum, backed by colonial Shamian Island, Qing ancestral halls and a striking river skyline. It suits a focused two to three days, often paired with Hong Kong or Shenzhen.
How many days do you need in Guangzhou?
Two to three. One day for yum cha, the old city and Chen Clan Hall, one for Shamian Island, Yongqingfang and the Pearl River at night, and a third for Baiyun Mountain or a Foshan day trip.
When is the best time to visit Guangzhou?
October to December, when it's dry and around 20-28C. Spring is humid and grey, and June to September is hot, wet and exposed to typhoons. Avoid Chinese New Year and the Canton Fair weeks in April and October, when hotel prices spike.
Do you need a visa for Guangzhou?
It depends on your passport. China has expanded visa-free entry for many nationalities and offers visa-free transit through Guangzhou for others, but rules change often. Check the current policy for your nationality with an official Chinese consulate source before booking.
How do you pay for things in Guangzhou?
Mobile payment dominates. Link an international card to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive, since many shops no longer handle cash smoothly. Carry a small amount of yuan as backup and expect foreign cards to be useless at most counters.
Guangzhou or Shenzhen, which should you visit?
Guangzhou for food, history and traditional Cantonese culture; Shenzhen for modern design, tech, theme parks and a younger, newer city. They're 30 minutes apart by high-speed rail, so seeing both in one trip is easy.
What is Guangzhou famous for?
Cantonese cuisine and dim sum, the Canton Fair trade show, its role as China's oldest continuously open trading port, the Canton Tower, and being the manufacturing and export hub of the Pearl River Delta.
