Halong Bay, Vietnam: Guia de viagem
Vietnam's limestone seascape: 1,600 jungle-topped karsts rising from emerald water, best seen from a slow overnight junk.
- Melhor época: October-April
- Orçamento diário: $80 to $180 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 to 3 days (with 3-4 in Hanoi)
Halong Bay is the postcard of Vietnam: more than a thousand limestone towers rising sheer from jade-green water, their flanks clothed in jungle, mist threading between them at dawn. The classic way in is an overnight junk cruise from Hanoi, kayaking into hidden lagoons, climbing viewpoint islands and sleeping on the water as fishing boats putter past.

Como se deslocar
Halong Bay is about 2.5 hours east of Hanoi by the new expressway, with shuttle buses, limousines vans and private transfers all included in most cruise packages. Cat Ba is reached by ferry from Hai Phong or by the Got ferry plus bus from Hanoi. On the water, your boat handles everything; on Cat Ba, rent a scooter or hire a car with driver.
Segurança
Halong Bay is very safe for visitors, with the main risks maritime rather than criminal: choose licensed, well-reviewed cruise operators, wear life jackets when kayaking and on tenders, and check weather policies since departures are cancelled in storms. Summer brings typhoon risk from June to August. On Cat Ba roads, rent scooters only if experienced and insured.
Perguntas frequentes
Is Halong Bay worth visiting?
Yes, on an overnight cruise rather than a day trip. Sleeping among the karsts, kayaking at dawn before the day boats arrive and watching mist lift off the water is the experience people imagine. Day trips from Hanoi are rushed and crowded by comparison; budget one to two nights.
How many days do you need in Halong Bay?
Two days and one night is the minimum that feels complete; three days and two nights lets you reach quieter corners like Bai Tu Long. Add three to four days in Hanoi and consider a night on Cat Ba for hiking and quieter beaches if you have a week in the north.
When is the best time to visit Halong Bay?
October to April, especially October-November and March-April, with clear skies and 18 to 28°C. June to August is hot, humid and typhoon-prone, and cruises can be cancelled by storms. December to February is atmospheric and quiet but cool and often misty.
How much does a Halong Bay cruise cost?
Budget group cruises run about $80 to $120 per person for one night; comfortable mid-range boats $130 to $250; and luxury vessels $300 and up, usually including transfers from Hanoi, meals and activities. Very cheap day cruises cut corners on route and safety, so read recent reviews.
Lan Ha Bay or Halong Bay: which is better?
Lan Ha Bay, reached via Cat Ba, is the same karst seascape with far fewer boats and cleaner water, and many newer operators cruise both. Classic Halong itineraries hit the famous named sights like Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top. If solitude matters more than checklist sights, choose Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long.
How do you get to Halong Bay from Hanoi?
Almost all cruises include shuttle or limousine-van transfers, about 2.5 hours via the expressway to Tuan Chau or Got piers. Independent travellers can take a bus to Halong City or Cat Ba, or a seaplane for the scenic route. Private cars take a similar time at roughly $60 to $90.
Can you visit Halong Bay without a cruise?
Partly. You can stay on Cat Ba island and take day boats into Lan Ha Bay, hike the national park and swim at island beaches, which suits budget travellers. But the iconic experience of anchoring overnight among the karsts requires a cruise, and the main bay sights are only reachable by boat.
