Juneau, United States: Guia de viagem
Alaska's glacier capital, reachable only by boat or plane.
- Melhor época: May-September
- Orçamento diário: $170 to $420 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 to 4 days
Juneau is the only US state capital you cannot reach by road, wedged between Gastineau Channel and a wall of coastal mountains. Mendenhall Glacier calves into its lake twenty minutes from downtown, humpback whales bubble-net feed in the surrounding channels, and bald eagles are as common as pigeons. Cruise passengers see it in a day; staying longer reveals trailheads, tramways and a surprisingly good food scene.
Bairros
- Downtown Juneau: Historic waterfront core, tram base, shops and the cruise docks.
- Mendenhall Valley: The 'Valley' suburb nearest the glacier, practical lodging.
- Douglas Island: Across the bridge, harbor views and a quiet local pace.
- Auke Bay: Northern harbor area, whale-watching departures and the ferry.
- Thane Road: Scenic residential stretch south along the channel.
O que fazer
- Mendenhall Glacier: Thirteen-mile river of ice with a visitor center and trails to Nugget Falls.
- Whale watching in the channel: Humpbacks guaranteed in season, bubble-net feeding a highlight.
- Mount Roberts Tramway: Rises 1,800 feet from the docks to alpine trails and a raptor center.
- Tracy Arm or Glacier Bay flight: Floatplane or boat into a fjord of calving tidewater glaciers.
Segredos escondidos
- Perseverance Trail from the end of Basin Road into mining country
- Alaska State Museum, compact and excellent on Native cultures
- King crab legs at Tracy's King Crab Shack on the dock
- Shrine of St. Thérèse, a stone chapel on its own island causeway
O que comer
- Wild Alaska salmon, grilled or as a salmon bake
- King crab legs fresh off the boat
- Halibut fish and chips at the harborside
- Spruce-tip beer from a local brewery
Como se deslocar
Arrive by Alaska Airlines flight or Alaska Marine Highway ferry, as no road connects Juneau to anywhere. Downtown is walkable, the city bus (Capital Transit) reaches Mendenhall Valley, and tour shuttles serve the glacier. Rent a car for a day if you want the full road system's 40 miles at your own pace.
Segurança
Juneau is safe from crime; the wilderness is not. Black bears frequent trails and even town in salmon season, so make noise, carry bear spray and never approach. Dress for cold rain any day of the year, stay on marked trails near the glacier as ice caves collapse, and file a plan for backcountry hikes. Weather grounds flights and boats regularly, so keep a buffer day.
Perguntas frequentes
What is the best time to visit Juneau?
May to September, with June-August warmest (55-65°F), driest in May and June, and best for wildlife. Humpbacks are present May-September with peak numbers mid-summer. September brings fall color and aurora chances but more rain. Winter suits only the hardy, with skiing at Eaglecrest.
Can you drive to Juneau?
No. Despite being Alaska's capital, no road connects it to the rest of North America. You arrive by plane from Seattle or Anchorage, by cruise ship, or on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry from Bellingham, Washington or other Inside Passage ports. Your car can come on the ferry.
How many days do you need in Juneau?
Two full days covers Mendenhall Glacier, a whale-watching trip and the tram. Three to four adds a Tracy Arm fjord cruise or flightseeing, hiking the Perseverance or Mount Roberts trails, and time for weather delays, which are common enough to plan around.
Can you see Mendenhall Glacier for free?
Yes, largely. The visitor center charges a small summer fee, but the trails including the half-mile round trip to thundering Nugget Falls beside the glacier are free. City buses reach a stop about 1.5 miles from the center, and many tours bundle transport. The glacier view from the road is free entirely.
Is Juneau worth visiting on an Alaska cruise?
It is many cruisers' favorite port. Book whale watching (humpbacks essentially guaranteed) or a Mendenhall trip independently for less than ship excursions, and ride the Mount Roberts Tram right from the dock. Even a few hours ashore delivers eagles, glaciers and great seafood.
What is the weather like in Juneau?
A temperate rainforest: expect drizzle on about 230 days a year. Summer highs run 55-65°F with long daylight, up to 18 hours in June. Layers, a real rain jacket (not an umbrella, it is windy) and waterproof shoes are the uniform. Clear days are glorious and unpredictable.
Can you see the northern lights in Juneau?
Sometimes, from late August through April on clear, dark nights, though Juneau's rain and southern Inside Passage location make Fairbanks far more reliable. September offers the best overlap of aurora darkness and open tourism. Check the aurora forecast and get away from downtown lights.
