Como se deslocar

Kandy is 3 to 4 hours from Colombo by train or bus, with the rail journey through the hills a highlight in itself. The centre is walkable, and tuk-tuks cover everything else for a dollar or two per hop. Book the Kandy-Ella train weeks ahead for observation or first-class seats; second-class reserved is the smart fallback. Day trips to Sigiriya and Dambulla run 2.5 hours each way.

Segurança

Kandy is safe and welcoming, with the usual petty-theft awareness in markets and on trains. Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees for the Temple of the Tooth, and remove shoes and hats. Monkeys around the lake and Udawatta Kele will snatch food. Hill roads are winding, so allow extra time and avoid night driving on rural stretches.

Perguntas frequentes

Is Kandy worth visiting?

Yes. It's Sri Lanka's cultural heart, home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a beautiful lake setting and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and it's the gateway to tea country and the famous scenic train to Ella. Two days fits most itineraries perfectly.

How many days do you need in Kandy?

Two to three. One day for the Temple of the Tooth, lake loop and a cultural dance show, one for Peradeniya Gardens and the Three Temples loop, and a third as a buffer for the train to Ella or a Sigiriya day trip.

When is the best time to visit Kandy?

December to April is driest in the hill country. Kandy gets rain year-round thanks to its elevation, but the southwest monsoon (May-September) is wettest. The Esala Perahera festival in July or August is spectacular but crowded.

How do you book the Kandy to Ella train?

Reserved seats open about 30 days ahead on Sri Lanka Railways or through agents, and sell out fast in season. First-class observation and second-class reserved are the best options; unreserved cars are an adventure but you may stand for hours.

Is Kandy safe for solo travellers?

Yes. It's a relaxed pilgrimage city with low crime. Standard precautions apply on trains and in markets, and solo women should use registered tuk-tuks or ride-hailing at night. Temple dress codes are strictly enforced.

What should you wear to the Temple of the Tooth?

Shoulders and knees covered, no hats, and shoes removed at the entrance (there's a storage counter). White clothing is traditional and respectful. Sarongs are available to borrow or buy near the gates if needed.

Can you do Sigiriya as a day trip from Kandy?

Yes, though it's a long day: roughly 2.5 hours each way by car or bus. Most travellers climb Sigiriya Rock early, add the Dambulla cave temples on the way back, and return by evening. Joy Plus sequences it against the heat and crowds.
