Kunming, China: Guia de viagem
China's City of Eternal Spring: the Stone Forest, Dianchi Lake and the gateway to Yunnan's mountain kingdoms.
- Melhor época: March-May, September-November
- Orçamento diário: $30 to $70 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 to 3 days
Kunming sits at 1,900 metres on the Yunnan plateau, where the air is cool, the flowers bloom year-round and the food, all mushrooms, rice noodles and rose pastries, is unlike anywhere else in China. Most travellers pass through on the way to Dali and Lijiang; the smart ones stay for the Stone Forest, Western Hills and one of Asia's great flower markets. As everywhere in China, set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival since cash is rarely accepted, and download a VPN if you need Western apps.
Perguntas frequentes
Is Kunming worth visiting?
Yes, don't just transit. The Stone Forest is one of China's great natural wonders, the city's spring climate is a relief after China's extremes, and Yunnan food (mushroom hotpots, rice noodles, rose pastries) is a destination in itself. Two days here makes the whole Yunnan trip better.
How many days do you need in Kunming?
Two to three. One day for the Stone Forest (optionally paired with Jiuxiang caves), one for Green Lake, Yuantong Temple and the old town, and a half-day for the Western Hills and Dragon Gate. Then take the high-speed train onward to Dali.
How do you get to the Stone Forest from Kunming?
It's about 90km southeast. Tourist buses run from the East Bus Station, or take the high-speed train to Shilin West station plus a short shuttle. Arrive at opening (8am) to walk the Major Stone Forest before the tour groups; the whole site takes 3 to 4 hours.
When is the best time to visit Kunming?
It earned the name City of Eternal Spring: temperatures sit between 15-24°C most of the year. March to May brings blossoms, September to November clear skies. Winter is dry and sunny with migratory seagulls at Green Lake. The June-August rainy season means afternoon showers.
Is Kunming a good base for visiting Yunnan?
The best. High-speed trains reach Dali in 2 hours and Lijiang in 3.5, and flights connect to Shangri-La, Xishuangbanna and beyond. The classic loop is Kunming to Dali to Lijiang to Shangri-La over 8 to 10 days; Joy Plus plans the whole route.
Do I need cash in Kunming?
Almost no one takes cash or foreign cards. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your international card before you arrive; they work everywhere from metros to street stalls. Carry a little cash as backup for rare cases.
What is cross-the-bridge noodles?
Yunnan's most famous dish: a bowl of broth kept boiling under a layer of chicken oil, served with raw chicken, fish, vegetables and rice noodles that you add yourself in order. Legend says a wife invented it to keep soup hot crossing a long bridge to her studying husband.
