Limassol, Cyprus: Guia de viagem

Cyprus's cosmopolitan second city: a marina, a medieval castle and the island's wine country behind it.

  • Melhor época: April-June and September-November
  • Orçamento diário: $100 to $180 USD
  • Duração ideal: 3 to 4 days

Limassol is Cyprus's most dynamic city: a working port turned marina playground, a castle where Richard the Lionheart married, and a seafront promenade that runs for kilometres. It is also the gateway to the Troodos foothills and the Commandaria wine villages, making it the island's best base for mixing city energy, beaches and wine country.

Bairros

  • Old Town: Around the castle: lanes of tavernas, bars and the municipal market.
  • Marina: The sleek yacht harbour with waterfront dining and nightlife.
  • Seafront (Molos): The long promenade strip of beaches, parks and hotels.
  • Germasogeia: The eastern tourist strip with busy beaches and restaurants.
  • Agios Nikolaos: A residential area near the marina with a local feel and lower prices.

Como se deslocar

Limassol sits between Larnaca and Paphos airports, each about 45 to 60 minutes by shuttle bus or taxi. Intercity buses run along the coast to both cities, and local buses cover the seafront strip. A car is strongly recommended for Kourion, the wine villages and Troodos; driving is on the left. The old town, marina and Molos promenade are easily walkable.

Segurança

Limassol is a safe, well-policed city with low violent crime; petty theft from beaches and cars is the main issue, so keep valuables with you. Summer heat is intense and humidity high, so plan sightseeing for mornings. Sea currents can be strong on open beaches, so use flagged swim areas. Rental cars cannot be taken into northern Cyprus.

Perguntas frequentes

Is Limassol or Paphos better to visit?

They suit different trips. Paphos is more relaxed with denser archaeology and the Akamas; Limassol is livelier, more urban and better placed centrally for exploring the whole island, with Kourion, the wine villages and Troodos on its doorstep. Many travellers split a week between both.

How many days do you need in Limassol?

Three to four days works well: one for the castle, old town and marina, one for Kourion and the west coast, one for the wine villages or Troodos, and one for the beach. Limassol also makes a practical single base for seeing all of southern Cyprus.

Does Limassol have good beaches?

Decent, not spectacular. The Molos promenade has several municipal beaches, Dasoudi offers eucalyptus shade, and Governor's Beach with its white cliffs is 25 minutes east. For Cyprus's best sand you would day-trip to the Akamas from Paphos or to Ayia Napa in the far east.

When is the best time to visit Limassol?

April to June and September to November for warm seas and comfortable sightseeing. February or March brings the famous Limassol Carnival, one of the Mediterranean's biggest. July and August are hot and humid above 33°C, and September hosts the wine festival in the municipal gardens.

How do you get to Limassol from the airport?

Neither Larnaca nor Paphos airport is far: both are about 45 to 60 minutes away. The Limassol Airport Express shuttle bus runs to both for around 9 euros, while taxis cost 50 to 70 euros. Intercity buses connect Limassol with Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca hourly.

Is Limassol expensive?

It is Cyprus's priciest city, especially the marina restaurants. Budget $100 to $180 a day. A taverna meze runs 18 to 28 euros, a local wine tasting 10 to 20 euros, Kourion entry 4.50 euros, and old town guesthouses remain reasonable compared with marina-front hotels.

What is Commandaria?

The world's oldest continuously produced named wine, a sweet amber dessert wine from the foothill villages north of Limassol, praised since the Crusades. You can taste it at the Cyprus Wine Museum in Erimi or, better, in the stone villages of the Krasochoria wine route such as Omodos and Lofou.
