Malé & the Maldives, Maldives: Guia de viagem
Impossibly blue atolls: overwater villas, house-reef snorkelling and the world's most famous island escape.
- Melhor época: November-April (dry season)
- Orçamento diário: $150 to $600+ USD
- Duração ideal: 4 to 7 days
The Maldives is 1,200 coral islands strung across the Indian Ocean, most of them barely above the waterline and ringed by lagoons in shades of blue that don't look real. The compact capital Malé is the gateway, but the real Maldives is out on the resort islands and local guesthouse atolls. Joy Plus matches your budget to the right island, sorts seaplane and speedboat transfers, and times your trip for the calmest, clearest water.
Bairros
- Malé: The dense, colourful capital for markets, mosques and a taste of local life before your transfer.
- Hulhumalé: The reclaimed island next to the airport with a long beach and budget-friendly guesthouses.
- North Malé Atoll: The closest resort ring, with short speedboat transfers and classic luxury islands.
- South Ari Atoll: The best atoll for whale sharks and manta rays, reachable by seaplane.
- Maafushi: The original local guesthouse island, the budget way to do the Maldives.
O que fazer
- Snorkel a house reef: Step off the beach or your villa ladder into coral gardens with turtles, rays and reef sharks.
- Sandbank picnic or sunset dolphin cruise: The classic Maldives excursions: a strip of sand in the ocean and spinner dolphins at dusk.
- Dive with mantas and whale sharks: South Ari and Baa Atolls offer some of the most reliable big-animal encounters on Earth.
- Malé walking tour: See the fish market, the Old Friday Mosque and the busy harbour in a couple of hours.
Segredos escondidos
- Local islands like Dhigurah and Fulidhoo for guesthouse prices and real village life.
- Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, where dozens of manta rays feed in plankton season (May-November).
- Bioluminescent 'sea of stars' plankton on Vaadhoo and other islands on dark nights.
- The 17th-century coral-stone Hukuru Miskiy mosque in Malé.
O que comer
- Mas huni, the breakfast of tuna, coconut, chilli and lime with roshi flatbread
- Garudhiya, a clear tuna broth served with rice, lime and chilli
- Fried reef fish and lobster at island barbecues
- Hedhikaa, Maldivian 'short eats' like fish croquettes and sweet bondi
Como se deslocar
Velana International Airport sits on Hulhumalé next to Malé, linked by road bridge. Resorts are reached by speedboat (nearby atolls) or seaplane (farther atolls), arranged by your resort and costing roughly $150 to $500 return. Between local islands, public ferries are cheap but slow and don't run daily; scheduled speedboats are faster.
Segurança
The Maldives is very safe, with resort islands essentially crime-free. On local islands, respect the conservative Muslim culture: bikinis are only allowed on designated 'bikini beaches', and alcohol is banned outside resorts. The real risks are the ocean: strong currents, sunburn and coral cuts. Never snorkel alone in unfamiliar channels, and use reef-safe sunscreen and rash guards.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in the Maldives?
Four to seven days is ideal. Fewer than four makes the transfers and cost feel rushed; more than a week on one small island can feel limiting unless you split between two atolls or add a diving focus.
Is the Maldives expensive?
It can be, but it doesn't have to be. Resorts run $300 to $2,000+ a night, while local islands like Maafushi and Dhigurah offer guesthouses from $50 to $120 a night with $10 to $15 meals. Transfers and resort extras are the hidden costs to plan for.
When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
November to April is the dry season with the calmest seas and best visibility, peaking around Christmas and Easter. May to October brings more rain and wind but lower prices, fewer crowds and the manta ray feeding season at Hanifaru Bay.
Can you visit the Maldives on a budget?
Yes, via local islands. Since 2009 guesthouses have been legal on inhabited islands, so you can sleep, eat and snorkel for $80 to $150 a day total. You trade overwater-villa luxury and alcohol for village atmosphere and the same turquoise water.
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
Most nationalities get a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival. You need a confirmed hotel booking, proof of onward travel and a completed traveller declaration form submitted online before arrival.
Is the Maldives safe for solo travellers?
Yes. Resort islands are extremely safe, and local islands are friendly with low crime. Solo travellers should respect local dress norms on inhabited islands, take care with ocean currents when snorkelling alone, and book transfers through their accommodation.
How do you get between islands in the Maldives?
Resorts arrange speedboat or seaplane transfers from Malé airport, with seaplanes flying only in daylight. For local islands, public ferries cost a few dollars but run limited schedules and never on Fridays; shared scheduled speedboats are the faster mid-price option.
