Naxos, Greece: Guia de viagem
The Cyclades' biggest island: Portara sunsets, marble villages and endless sandy west coast.
- Melhor época: May-June and September
- Orçamento diário: $100 to $180 USD
- Duração ideal: 5 to 7 days
Naxos is the largest and most self-sufficient of the Cyclades, with mountain villages, olive groves and marble quarries behind a west coast of wide sandy beaches. Chora is topped by a Venetian kastro and framed by the Portara, a lone marble doorway that catches every sunset. It is calmer and cheaper than Santorini or Mykonos while being far more varied. Joy Plus balances beach days with the interior.

- Agios Prokopios & Agia Anna: The main beach strip minutes from town, sandy, shallow and well served by hotels.
- Plaka & Mikri Vigla: Long dune-backed sands with kite and windsurfing at the southern end.
- Halki & the Tragea: The green olive-grove heartland with neoclassical houses and a citron distillery.
- Apeiranthos: A marble-paved mountain village of Cretan descent with tiny museums and views.

- Kitron liqueur tasting at the Vallindras distillery in Halki, unchanged since 1896.
O que comer
- Graviera Naxou, the island's protected gruyere-style cheese
- Naxos potatoes, famously grown for the whole of Greece
- Rosto, pork slow-cooked in tomato and wine
- Kitron, the citron-leaf liqueur made only on Naxos
Como se deslocar
Naxos has a small airport with flights from Athens, but most people arrive by ferry from Piraeus, Mykonos or Santorini. Chora is walkable and buses connect the main west-coast beaches and larger villages, though schedules thin out inland. A rental car is the best way to see the mountain villages, Apollonas and remote beaches; roads are paved but winding. Water taxis link nearby beaches in summer.
Segurança
Naxos is very safe, with the usual island cautions rather than crime concerns. The meltemi wind can make west-coast swimming choppy and is strong enough to affect small ferries in July and August. Mountain driving involves narrow bends and occasional goats, and mopeds slip easily on gravel. Hiking Mount Zas needs early starts, real shoes and plenty of water in summer heat.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in Naxos?
Five to seven days suits the island. One day is for Chora, the kastro and the Portara, two or three for the west-coast beaches, one for a mountain village loop through Halki and Apeiranthos, one for Mount Zas or the Apollonas kouros, and one spare for a boat trip to Koufonisia or Delos.
Is Naxos better than Santorini or Mykonos?
For beaches, food, hiking and value, most travellers find Naxos better. It has far longer sandy beaches, a real agricultural interior, cheaper accommodation and fewer crowds. Santorini wins on caldera drama and Mykonos on nightlife, so many visitors combine Naxos with one of them by ferry rather than choosing.
When is the best time to visit Naxos?
May, June and September are ideal, with warm sea, open tavernas and space on the beaches. July and August bring the strongest meltemi winds along with the biggest crowds and prices. October is quiet and still pleasant for hiking, while winter sees most tourist businesses close and ferries reduce.
Do you need a car in Naxos?
It is strongly recommended. Buses serve Chora and the main west-coast beaches well but reach mountain villages, Apollonas and remote coves only a few times a day. A small rental car for three or four days unlocks the interior, which is the main reason to choose Naxos over smaller Cyclades islands.
Which beaches are best in Naxos?
Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are the closest and best organised, Plaka is a long dune-backed stretch with quieter far ends, Mikri Vigla splits into a kitesurf side and a calm side, and Alyko has cedar forest and empty sand. Further south, Kastraki and Pyrgaki are the emptiest sandy bays.
How do you get to Naxos?
Ferries from Piraeus take three and a half to five hours depending on whether you take the high-speed or conventional boat, and frequent connections run from Mykonos, Paros and Santorini in under two hours. Olympic and Sky Express fly from Athens to Naxos in about 45 minutes, though the small airport limits seats.
Is Naxos expensive?
Naxos is one of the best-value Cyclades islands, with a working farming economy keeping food and accommodation prices below Santorini and Mykonos. Budget around $100 to $180 a day for mid-range travel including a car. August is the pricey month, while June and September offer near-identical weather at lower rates.
