Nicosia, Cyprus: Guia de viagem
Europe's last divided capital: a Venetian-walled old town you can cross between two countries on foot.
- Melhor época: March to May, October to November
- Orçamento diário: $80 to $170 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 days
Nicosia is the only capital in the world still split in two, ringed by a star-shaped Venetian wall with a UN buffer zone running through the middle. Cross at Ledra Street and in 30 seconds you go from Cypriot coffee shops and Greek Orthodox churches to a Gothic cathedral turned mosque and Ottoman caravanserais. It is the least beach-oriented, most genuinely interesting part of Cyprus, and almost every visitor skips it.
Bairros
- Laiki Geitonia & Ledra: The restored south-side lanes and the pedestrian shopping street that ends at the crossing.
- North Nicosia (Lefkoşa): Selimiye Mosque, the Büyük Han caravanserai and the bazaar quarter over the buffer zone.
- Chrysaliniotissa & Taht-el-kale: Crumbling-then-gentrifying old quarters of craft workshops and quiet courtyards.
- Engomi & Strovolos: Modern suburbs with malls, business hotels and the university crowd.
O que fazer
- Cross at Ledra Street: Walk between the Republic of Cyprus and the north through the UN buffer zone, passport in hand.
- See Selimiye Mosque: A French Gothic cathedral built by Lusignan kings, converted with minarets after 1570.
- Visit Büyük Han: A 1572 Ottoman caravanserai restored into a courtyard of cafés and craft shops.
- Tour the Cyprus Museum: The island's archaeological collection, from Neolithic figures to the Aphrodite of Soloi.
- Walk the Venetian walls: Eleven bastions of 16th-century fortification, with the Famagusta Gate as a cultural centre.
Segredos escondidos
- The Shacolas Tower observatory, looking straight down over the buffer zone.
- Ledra Palace, the abandoned hotel now housing UN peacekeepers.
- Ermou Street's street-art and workshop stretch in Taht-el-kale.
- The Leventis Municipal Museum, a free and excellent city history collection.
O que comer
- Meze of 20-plus small plates, the proper Cypriot dinner
- Halloumi grilled fresh, plus sheftalia sausages
- Kleftiko, slow-baked lamb from a sealed oven
- Şeftali kebab and künefe on the north side
Como se deslocar
The old town inside the walls is walkable in an afternoon; buses serve the suburbs and there is no tram or metro. Larnaca Airport is 45 minutes by shuttle for around $10, Paphos about two hours. Crossings on foot at Ledra Street and by car at Agios Dometios are open 24 hours with a passport. Rental cars from the south often can't be insured in the north, so check first.
Segurança
Nicosia is one of Europe's safest capitals with very low violent crime. The buffer zone itself is a military area, so never photograph checkpoints, soldiers or UN positions. Carry your passport whenever you're near the crossings, note the north uses Turkish lira while the south uses euros, and keep travel insurance details handy since some policies exclude the north.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in Nicosia?
Two days is right: one for the south side's museums, walls and Laiki Geitonia, and one for crossing into the north for Selimiye Mosque, Büyük Han and the bazaar. A single long day works if you're based on the coast and start early.
Can you cross between north and south Nicosia?
Yes. The Ledra Street pedestrian crossing is open 24 hours and takes a couple of minutes with a passport, with no fee. EU citizens and most Western nationalities cross freely. You'll show ID at both checkpoints and can return the same day.
Is Nicosia worth visiting?
Yes, if you want history rather than beaches. It's the only divided capital left in the world, and walking between two de facto states inside one walled old town is an experience nowhere else offers. The museums and food are excellent and it's far cheaper than the resorts.
Is Nicosia expensive?
Cheap for Europe: budget $80 to $170 a day. Hotels run $60 to $120, a full meze $20 to $30 and museum entry $5 to $10. The north side is significantly cheaper again, with meals often half the southern price thanks to the lira exchange rate.
Is Nicosia safe?
Very. Cyprus has among the lowest violent crime rates in Europe, and both sides of Nicosia are safe to walk at night. The rules to follow are practical: carry a passport near crossings, don't photograph the buffer zone or military personnel, and check your insurance covers the north.
When is the best time to visit Nicosia?
March to May and October to November. Nicosia is inland with no sea breeze, so July and August routinely hit 40C and sightseeing becomes miserable. Winter is mild at 10 to 17C and perfectly comfortable for a city break.
Is Nicosia good for solo travellers?
Yes. It's extremely safe, walkable and cheap, and English is widely spoken on both sides. The old town café culture is relaxed about solo visitors, and the crossing plus the museums easily fill two independent days without needing a tour or a car.
