Nusa Penida, Indonesia: Guia de viagem
Bali's wild neighbour: limestone cliffs, manta rays and roads that test you.
- Melhor época: April to October
- Orçamento diário: $30 to $90 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 to 3 days
Nusa Penida is the island every Bali feed is built on: Kelingking's dinosaur-shaped headland, Angel's Billabong, Diamond Beach's carved staircase. What the photos hide is the effort. Roads are steep and broken in places, viewpoints need real descents, and the crowds arrive in convoys around 10am. Come for two nights instead of a day trip and you get sunrise at Kelingking alone and manta rays before the boats. Joy Plus times the island around the tour buses rather than with them.
Bairros
- Toyapakeh / Banjar Nyuh: Where the fast boats land: most guesthouses, cafes, rental scooters and dive shops.
- Ped: The north coast strip, sunset warungs and easy access to both loops.
- West Penida: Kelingking, Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay in one circuit.
- East Penida: Diamond Beach, Atuh and Thousand Islands viewpoint, quieter and greener.
- Nusa Lembongan: The small neighbour across the yellow bridge, flatter and better for a lazy day.
O que fazer
- Kelingking Beach: The T-Rex cliff. Go at sunrise; the descent is a steep scramble on ropes and steps.
- Manta Point snorkelling: Reef mantas circling a cleaning station, usually a near-guaranteed sighting.
- Angel's Billabong & Broken Beach: A natural infinity pool and a collapsed sea arch, five minutes apart.
- Diamond Beach: Hand-carved stairs down a limestone wall to white sand and rock spires.
Segredos escondidos
- Peguyangan Blue Staircase, 700 blue steps down to a cliffside spring temple.
- Tembeling forest and its jungle pools, reached by a rough track.
- Banah Cliff viewpoint, usually empty at sunset.
- Suwehan Beach, a long descent that keeps the tour groups away.
O que comer
- Nasi campur at a Ped warung for a couple of dollars
- Grilled fresh fish at Crystal Bay sunset shacks
- Smoothie bowls in Toyapakeh's cafe strip
- Babi guling on a run into the villages
Como se deslocar
Fast boats run from Sanur to Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh in 30 to 45 minutes, roughly $15 to $25 each way, with several departures each morning. On the island, scooters cost about $6 to $8 a day but the roads are genuinely rough, so hire a driver for around $40 to $50 a day if you are not a confident rider. Boat trips to Manta Point and Gamat Bay run as half-day snorkel tours from about $25.
Segurança
Scooter accidents are the real danger here: steep gradients, gravel and blind bends injure visitors weekly, and travel insurance often excludes riding without a licence. Cliff edges have no railings and the descents to Kelingking and Diamond Beach are steep and slippery when wet. Currents at Crystal Bay and Manta Point are strong, so only snorkel with a boat crew. Medical facilities are basic; serious cases go back to Bali.
Perguntas frequentes
Is Nusa Penida worth visiting?
Yes, if you accept it is rugged rather than polished. Kelingking, Broken Beach, Diamond Beach and the manta snorkelling are genuinely world-class, and staying two nights gets you those spots before the day-trip boats land. If you want smooth roads and resort comfort, Lembongan or south Bali suits better.
How many days do you need in Nusa Penida?
Two nights is the sweet spot: one day for the west loop with Kelingking at sunrise, one for the east loop with Diamond Beach and Atuh, and a morning boat to Manta Point. A single day trip from Bali covers three or four stops in a rush and misses the island entirely at its best hours.
How do you get to Nusa Penida from Bali?
Fast boats leave Sanur throughout the morning and take 30 to 45 minutes to Toyapakeh or Banjar Nyuh, costing about $15 to $25 each way. Book the day before in high season and take the earliest departure you can. Crossings can be cancelled in rough weather, so avoid scheduling a flight home the same evening.
Is it safe to ride a scooter in Nusa Penida?
Only if you are an experienced rider. The roads are steep, narrow and broken in stretches, and injuries are common enough that clinics on the island see them daily. You need an international licence for insurance to apply. Hiring a driver for $40 to $50 a day is the safer and barely more expensive option.
When is the best time to visit Nusa Penida?
April to October is the dry season with calmer seas, better visibility for snorkelling and safer roads. Manta sightings are good year-round but water is clearest from April to June. January and February bring heavy rain, rough crossings and slippery cliff descents.
Can you see manta rays in Nusa Penida?
Yes, Manta Point off the south-west coast has a cleaning station where reef mantas appear most mornings, and operators quote sighting rates above 80 percent. Trips run about $25 to $35 for snorkelling or $80 to $110 for two dives. The swell there can be strong, so take seasickness tablets if you are prone.
Is Nusa Penida expensive?
No. Guesthouses run $15 to $35 a night, warung meals $2 to $4, scooters $6 to $8 a day and boat tours $25 to $35. Budget travellers manage on about $30 to $40 a day including the crossing, while a private driver and a nicer cliffside hotel pushes it to $90 or so.
