Olbia, Italy: Guia de viagem
The gateway to Sardinia's Costa Smeralda: white-sand beaches, nuragic ruins and a genuinely local old town.
- Melhor época: May-June and September
- Orçamento diário: $110 to $200 USD
- Duração ideal: 4 to 7 days
Most people land at Olbia's airport and drive straight past it to the Costa Smeralda, which is a mistake. Behind the working port sits a charming pedestrian old town of granite churches and wine bars, and within 20 minutes lie some of Sardinia's finest white-sand beaches, the islands of the Maddalena archipelago and 3,000-year-old nuragic tombs.

Como se deslocar
Olbia Costa Smeralda airport is 5km from town with flights across Europe, and ferries link the port to Civitavecchia, Livorno and Genoa. The old town is walkable and summer buses reach Pittulongu and Porto Rotondo, but a car is close to essential for the beaches, Costa Smeralda, La Maddalena ferry at Palau and the nuragic sites. Roads are good and driving is relaxed outside August.
Segurança
Olbia and the Costa Smeralda are very safe, with crime largely limited to theft from cars at beach car parks, so leave nothing visible. The real hazards are natural: the mistral wind whips up seas and sand, sun is fierce from May to September, and jellyfish occasionally appear in late summer. Book everything far ahead for August, when Sardinia fills with Italian holidaymakers.
Perguntas frequentes
Is Olbia worth staying in?
Yes. Most people treat it as an airport town, but the old town is genuinely pleasant with excellent restaurants and wine bars, Pittulongu's white sand is 10 minutes away, and prices are far below Porto Cervo. It is the most practical base for exploring northeast Sardinia.
How many days do you need in Olbia?
Four to seven days. Allow one day for the old town and Pittulongu, a boat day for the La Maddalena archipelago, a day for Tavolara and the southern coves, a day up the Costa Smeralda and San Pantaleo, plus beach days in between. A week disappears quickly here.
What are the best beaches near Olbia?
Pittulongu is the closest with white sand and Tavolara views. Porto Istana and Capo Ceraso to the south are quieter. Further afield, La Cinta at San Teodoro, Brandinchi ('Little Tahiti') and the La Maddalena islands offer the region's finest swimming. Choose based on wind: sheltered coves when the mistral blows.
Do you need a car in Olbia?
Strongly recommended. The old town is walkable and summer buses reach Pittulongu, but the beaches, Costa Smeralda, Palau's La Maddalena ferry and the nuragic sites all require a car. Rentals are cheapest booked well in advance, and automatics sell out fast in summer.
When is the best time to visit Olbia?
May, June and September offer 24 to 29°C weather, warm-enough sea and room to breathe. July and August bring crowds and peak prices, especially mid-August. October stays mild at around 22°C with quiet beaches, while winter is peaceful but many resorts and boat trips shut down.
Is Olbia expensive?
Cheaper than the Costa Smeralda proper but not budget territory. Budget $110 to $200 a day. A boat trip to La Maddalena costs 40 to 70 euros, a seafood dinner 25 to 40 euros, and accommodation in the old town is good value outside August, when prices across Sardinia roughly double.
How do you get to the La Maddalena islands from Olbia?
Drive or take the bus 45 minutes north to Palau, where ferries cross to La Maddalena island every 15 to 30 minutes. Easier still, full-day boat tours leave directly from Olbia and Palau, stopping at the archipelago's best coves including views of the protected pink-sand Spiaggia Rosa.
