Saint Lucia, Saint Lucia: Guia de viagem
Twin volcanic Pitons, rainforest waterfalls, sulphur springs, and the Caribbean's most dramatic coastline.
- Melhor época: December to April (dry season)
- Orçamento diário: $120 to $240 USD
- Duração ideal: 5 to 7 days
Saint Lucia is the most cinematic island in the Caribbean: the Pitons rise straight out of the sea, rainforest trails end in waterfalls, and you can drive into a collapsed volcano to bathe in mud. Beyond the honeymoon resorts of Soufriere there is a working island of fishing villages, Friday night street parties and creole cooking. Joy Plus balances the postcard views with the local side.
Bairros
- Soufriere: The scenic south: the Pitons, Sulphur Springs, botanical gardens, and waterfalls.
- Rodney Bay: The lively north: restaurants, marina, Reduit Beach, and most of the nightlife.
- Gros Islet: A fishing village famous for its Friday night street party and grilled seafood.
- Castries: The capital: the central market, cathedral, and cruise ship harbour.
- Marigot Bay: A sheltered yacht filled cove ringed by palms, one of the prettiest anchorages anywhere.
O que fazer
- Hike Gros Piton: A steep half day climb rewarded with views over the sister Piton and the sea.
- Sulphur Springs mud bath: Drive into a dormant volcano and soak in warm mineral mud at Soufriere.
- Friday jump-up at Gros Islet: Street food, rum and soca as the whole village turns into a party.
- Diamond Falls & Botanical Gardens: A mineral stained waterfall set in lush tropical gardens.
Segredos escondidos
- Anse Chastanet and Anse Mamin for shore snorkelling straight off a volcanic beach.
- Castries Central Market on a Saturday morning for spices, cocoa sticks and hot sauces.
- The Tet Paul Nature Trail: 45 easy minutes for the island's best Piton viewpoint.
- A roadside bake and saltfish breakfast in a village rather than at the resort buffet.
O que comer
- Green fig and saltfish, the national dish
- Grilled fresh snapper at the Gros Islet street party
- Bouyon, a hearty creole one pot stew
- Chocolate from the island's cocoa estates
Como se deslocar
Hewanorra International in the south serves most long haul flights and is about 90 minutes from the northern resorts, while smaller George F. L. Charles Airport sits beside Castries. Shared minibuses are cheap and cover the main coastal routes but stop running early. Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare first. Renting a car gives freedom but the roads are steep, winding and driving is on the left. Water taxis between Soufriere and Marigot Bay are a scenic alternative.
Segurança
Saint Lucia is generally welcoming, with tourist areas well policed, though petty theft and opportunistic scams occur around Castries and busy beaches. Avoid unlit areas at night and do not leave valuables on the sand. Sea conditions on the Atlantic east coast are rough, so swim on the calm Caribbean side. Hikes like Gros Piton are steep and hot, so start early, take water and hire a guide. Tap water is generally safe in main areas.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in Saint Lucia?
Five to seven days works best. That gives you two or three relaxed beach days in the north, a full day around Soufriere for the Pitons, Sulphur Springs and Diamond Falls, a boat or snorkelling trip, and a Friday night at the Gros Islet jump-up. Shorter three day trips are possible but the long, winding drive between north and south eats into your time.
When is the best time to visit Saint Lucia?
December to April is the dry season with reliable sunshine, calm seas and the busiest, priciest resorts. May and early June offer good weather with fewer visitors and better rates. September and October are the wettest, highest risk hurricane months and some hotels close. For carnival atmosphere, July brings the island's biggest street celebrations.
Is Saint Lucia good for solo travellers?
Yes, particularly around Rodney Bay where restaurants, hostels and guesthouses make it easy to meet people, and organised hikes and catamaran trips are sociable. Use registered taxis at night, stick to well lit areas and keep valuables secured. Many solo visitors combine a few nights in the north with a couple of nights near Soufriere for the scenery.
Can you climb the Pitons?
Gros Piton is the one most visitors climb: a steep two hour ascent each way on a marked trail, with a local guide required and a fee payable at Fond Gens Libre. Reasonable fitness is enough, but it is hot and relentless, so start at dawn and carry plenty of water. Petit Piton is far more technical and generally discouraged for casual hikers.
Do you need a car in Saint Lucia?
Not essential. Many visitors use taxis, hotel transfers and organised day tours, which is simpler given the steep, winding roads and left hand driving. A rental car is worthwhile if you want to explore fishing villages, remote beaches and viewpoints at your own pace. Shared minibuses are very cheap for the main coastal routes but do not run late at night.
Is Saint Lucia expensive?
It can be, especially in the all inclusive resorts around Soufriere that dominate the honeymoon market. Costs drop sharply if you stay in guesthouses around Rodney Bay or Gros Islet, eat at local cook shops and street parties, and use minibuses. Expect around $120 to $240 a day for a comfortable mid range trip including activities and transport.
Which side of Saint Lucia should you stay on?
Stay north around Rodney Bay and Gros Islet for beaches, restaurants, nightlife and better value, and south around Soufriere for the Piton views, rainforest and romantic resorts. Splitting your stay between both is the ideal approach on a week long trip, since the drive between them takes well over an hour on twisting mountain roads.
