Santander, Spain: Guia de viagem

Green Spain's elegant bay city: city beaches, a royal palace on a headland and Cantabria's cliffs and caves beyond.

  • Melhor época: June-September
  • Orçamento diário: $100 to $180 USD
  • Duração ideal: 3 to 5 days

Santander curls around one of the world's finest bays, backed by green Cantabrian hills rather than dry Mediterranean scrub. Rebuilt after a 1941 fire, the city is more belle époque than medieval: a royal summer palace on the Magdalena peninsula, the sweeping crescent of El Sardinero beach, and the Renzo Piano-designed Centro Botín on the waterfront. Beyond it lies Spain's most underrated coastline.

Bairros

  • El Sardinero: The grand beach district of belle époque hotels, casino and two long crescents of sand.
  • Centro & Puertochico: The rebuilt core and small fishing harbour, with the best tapas streets.
  • Península de la Magdalena: A parkland headland with the royal palace, sea-lion pools and coastal paths.
  • Cabo Mayor: Cliff-top lighthouse walks north of the beaches.
  • Somo & Loredo: Long surf beaches across the bay, 20 minutes by passenger ferry.

O que fazer

  • Palacio de la Magdalena: Tour the former royal summer residence and walk the whole peninsula park.
  • El Sardinero beaches: Swim or walk the two crescents, then follow the promenade to Cabo Mayor.
  • Centro Botín: See the Renzo Piano arts centre and its rooftop views over the bay.
  • Altamira & Santillana del Mar: Visit the cave-art replica museum and Spain's best-preserved medieval village, 30 minutes west.

Segredos escondidos

  • The ferry to Somo for empty sand and surf schools 20 minutes from the centre.
  • Mercado de la Esperanza's fish stalls and the bars behind it.
  • Faro de Cabo Mayor's cliff path at sunset.
  • Cabárceno wildlife park in a reclaimed iron mine, 20 minutes inland.

O que comer

  • Rabas, Cantabrian battered squid, the local bar staple
  • Anchovies from Santoña with Cantabrian butter
  • Cocido montañés, the region's bean and cabbage stew
  • Sobaos pasiegos and quesada for dessert

Como se deslocar

Santander has an airport 10 minutes from the centre with UK and Spanish links, ferries from Portsmouth and Plymouth, and trains to Madrid and Bilbao. The seafront is walkable from centre to Sardinero in about 40 minutes, and buses cover the rest cheaply. The little bay ferries to Somo and Pedreña are a highlight, while a car helps for Santillana, Comillas and the Picos de Europa.

Segurança

Santander is one of Spain's safest cities, with petty theft rare outside busy summer beaches. Atlantic swimming is the main hazard: currents and shore break at El Sardinero and Somo can be strong, so follow flag warnings. Weather changes fast in green Spain, so pack a rain layer even in August, and note that many restaurants pause between 4pm and 8pm.

Perguntas frequentes

How many days do you need in Santander?

Three to four days. One day covers the centre, Centro Botín and Puertochico tapas, a second the Magdalena peninsula and El Sardinero, and a third Santillana del Mar with Altamira or Comillas. A fourth day allows the Picos de Europa or Cabárceno wildlife park.

Is Santander worth visiting?

Yes, especially in summer. It offers proper city beaches, one of Europe's great bays, excellent seafood and far fewer tourists than Barcelona or San Sebastián. It also makes the best base for Cantabria's caves, medieval villages and mountains, all within an hour's drive.

When is the best time to visit Santander?

June to September, when temperatures sit around 22 to 26°C and the beaches come alive; this is northern Spain, so even August rarely feels oppressive. Expect rain in any month. Spring and autumn are green and quiet but wetter, and winter is mild, grey and low-season.

Does Santander have good beaches?

Very good ones. El Sardinero's two crescents are wide, clean and Blue Flag, La Magdalena and Los Peligros are sheltered and family-friendly, and the ferry to Somo and Loredo reaches kilometres of surf sand. Water is Atlantic-cool, typically 19 to 21°C at the height of summer.

Is Santander expensive?

Reasonable by Spanish coastal standards. Budget $100 to $180 a day. A plate of rabas runs 8 to 12 euros, a full seafood dinner 25 to 40 euros, Magdalena Palace tours around 3 euros and Altamira 3 euros. August pushes hotel prices up sharply, so book early.

How far is Bilbao from Santander?

About 100km, roughly 75 minutes by car or 1h15 to 1h30 by bus. Trains take longer on the narrow-gauge line. A Guggenheim day trip is entirely doable, and many visitors combine both cities with San Sebastián on a northern Spain coastal route.

Can you visit the Altamira caves?

Not the original chamber, which closed to protect the 36,000-year-old paintings. The Museo de Altamira near Santillana del Mar houses an exact full-scale replica, the Neocueva, which is excellent and open year-round. A small lottery admits a handful of visitors to the real cave on Fridays.
