Sanya, China: Guia de viagem
China's tropical south, where Hainan's beaches meet duty-free malls.
- Melhor época: November-April
- Orçamento diário: $60 to $200 USD
- Duração ideal: 4 to 5 days
Sanya sits on the southern tip of Hainan Island at roughly the same latitude as Hawaii, and China treats it accordingly: high-rise resorts along Yalong Bay, duty-free shopping halls the size of airports, and coconut groves behind it all. Winter is when the rest of the country arrives to escape the cold, and the beaches genuinely deliver.
Bairros
- Yalong Bay: The five-star strip: clean sand, calm water, resorts with private beach sections.
- Dadonghai: Central, walkable and cheaper, with the liveliest beach and most restaurants.
- Sanya Bay: A long city beach lined with coconut palms and mid-range hotels, good for sunsets.
- Haitang Bay: Newest and most exclusive, home to the giant duty-free complex and luxury resorts.
- Sanya city centre: The real town, with the night market, seafood streets and local prices.
O que fazer
- Yalong Bay beach day: Swim the clearest water in Sanya on an eight-kilometre curve of white sand.
- Wuzhizhou Island: Snorkel and dive off a small island 30 minutes from shore, best on a weekday morning.
- Nanshan Temple: See the 108-metre Guanyin statue standing out in the sea on a causeway.
- Sanya seafood market: Buy your own fish and crab at First Market and pay a stall to cook it.
Segredos escondidos
- Houhai village near Tenghai, a scruffy surf town where beginners learn on soft waves
- Luhuitou Park at dusk for the whole bay lit up below the deer statue
- Yanoda rainforest early on a weekday, before the group tours arrive
- Xidao Island's quieter west side, skipped by most day-trippers
O que comer
- Wenchang chicken, Hainan's poached original of the Singapore dish
- Coconut chicken hotpot simmered in the water of young coconuts
- Jiaji duck, sliced and served with a ginger-garlic dip
- Fresh mango and coconut ice at the night market
Como se deslocar
Sanya sprawls, so plan around it. Didi is cheap and widely used, with rides between bays running 40-90 yuan. Buses connect Dadonghai, Sanya Bay and Yalong Bay for 5-10 yuan but crawl in traffic. The Hainan high-speed rail loop reaches Haikou in 90 minutes and stops at Sanya station, 15 minutes from the centre.
Segurança
Sanya is very safe, with tourist scams the main annoyance: agreed prices at the seafood market, metered or app-booked taxis, and inflated boat-trip commissions. Typhoon season runs July to October. Jellyfish appear in summer, currents are strong outside marked swim zones, and you will need a Chinese payment app or a card that works with Alipay's tourist function.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in Sanya?
Four to five days works well: two on the beach at Yalong or Dadonghai, one for Wuzhizhou Island or Xidao, one for Nanshan Temple and the rainforest, and half a day for duty-free shopping. A week suits anyone treating it as a pure resort holiday.
Which bay is best to stay in Sanya?
Yalong Bay has the cleanest water and best resorts but nothing outside the hotels. Dadonghai is central, cheapest and walkable to restaurants and nightlife. Sanya Bay suits sunsets and mid-range budgets. Haitang Bay is the most luxurious and closest to the duty-free mall but feels isolated.
Do you need a visa to visit Sanya?
Hainan runs a visa-free policy for citizens of dozens of countries, allowing stays of up to 30 days if you fly directly into Haikou or Sanya and stay on the island. Book through a registered travel agency or hotel that files your details. If you plan to continue to mainland China, you need a standard visa.
When is the best time to visit Sanya?
November to April is dry, warm and sunny, which is also peak season with Chinese New Year the busiest and priciest week. May to October is hot and humid with typhoon risk from July, though rain often comes in short bursts and hotel prices drop by half.
Is Sanya expensive?
Cheaper than you would expect outside peak weeks. Mid-range hotels run $50 to $100, five-star resorts $150 to $350, and hostels $15 to $25. Local seafood meals cost $8 to $15, buying at the market and paying for cooking is cheaper still, and taxis are a few dollars. Budget $70 to $100 a day mid-range.
Is Sanya good for swimming and diving?
Yes for swimming: Yalong Bay has the clearest, calmest water and marked safe zones. Diving is decent rather than world-class, centred on Wuzhizhou and Xidao islands with visibility of 10-20 metres and simple reefs. Discover-scuba dives cost around 400-600 yuan and suit first-timers.
Do people speak English in Sanya?
Very little outside resort front desks. Download a translation app with offline Chinese and use image translation for menus. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arriving, since cash is rarely accepted and foreign cards work in few places. Save destination names in Chinese characters for taxi drivers.
