St. Maarten, Sint Maarten / Saint-Martin: Guia de viagem
Two countries on one island: Dutch beach bars, French bistros, and planes landing over Maho Beach.
- Melhor época: December-April (dry season)
- Orçamento diário: $110 to $220 USD
- Duração ideal: 4 to 6 days
St. Maarten is the only island in the world split between two nations: Dutch Sint Maarten in the south with its boardwalk, casinos and famous Maho Beach plane-spotting, and French Saint-Martin in the north with bakeries, bistros and quieter bays. Add 37 beaches and easy boat trips to Anguilla and St. Barths, and it punches far above its size. Joy Plus splits your days across both halves.
Bairros
- Philipsburg: The Dutch capital: Front Street shopping, the boardwalk, and cruise crowds.
- Simpson Bay: The Dutch side's nightlife hub: bars, restaurants, marina, and a long beach.
- Maho: Beach beside the runway, famous for jets landing metres overhead.
- Grand Case: The French side's culinary village: beachfront bistros and lolo barbecue shacks.
- Orient Bay: A long French-side beach with beach clubs, watersports, and a lively scene.
O que fazer
- Plane-spotting at Maho Beach: Watch wide-body jets skim the sand on final approach to Princess Juliana.
- Dinner in Grand Case: French bistros and open-air lolo grills on one legendary beachfront strip.
- Boat trip to Pinel Island: A five-minute ferry to a tiny island with shallow, calm turquoise water.
- Day trip to Anguilla or St. Barths: Fast ferries to two of the Caribbean's most exclusive neighbours.
Segredos escondidos
- Happy Bay, reached by a short walk from Friar's Bay, usually near-empty.
- The Loterie Farm rainforest trails and pools on Pic Paradis, the island's high point.
- Lolo barbecue shacks in Grand Case for ribs and johnnycakes at a fraction of bistro prices.
- Sunday afternoons at Le Galion, a shallow lagoon-like beach popular with local families.
O que comer
- Grilled ribs and johnnycakes at a Grand Case lolo
- French pastries and baguettes on the northern side
- Fresh conch and snapper on the Dutch boardwalk
- Guavaberry liqueur, the island's traditional drink
Como se deslocar
Princess Juliana International sits on the Dutch side beside Maho Beach and serves the whole island plus regional hops. There is no border control between the Dutch and French halves, so you simply drive across. Public minibuses run cheaply along the main routes but are infrequent at night. Taxis are unmetered with fixed zone rates, so agree the price first. Renting a car is the most practical option; driving is on the right.
Segurança
St. Maarten is generally welcoming, but car break-ins and petty theft from beaches are the main risks, especially at quieter bays and trailheads, so leave nothing visible in a parked vehicle. Take normal precautions at night around Philipsburg and Simpson Bay. Some beaches have strong surf and undertow on the Atlantic-facing east coast. The island lies in the hurricane belt, so check forecasts between June and November.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in St. Maarten?
Four to six days is ideal. That gives you time for several beaches across both the Dutch and French sides, an afternoon at Maho watching planes land, dinner in Grand Case, a boat trip to Pinel Island or Creole Rock, and a full day excursion to Anguilla or St. Barths. The island is small, so you can see a lot without rushing.
Do you need a passport to cross between the Dutch and French sides?
No. There is no border control between Sint Maarten and Saint-Martin, and you cross freely by car or bus with only a small monument marking the line. You will need your passport to arrive on the island and for ferry day trips to Anguilla or St. Barths, which are separate territories with immigration formalities.
Which side of St. Maarten is better to stay on?
The Dutch side around Simpson Bay and Maho has more nightlife, casinos, big-resort options and the airport, so it suits travellers who want activity and convenience. The French side around Grand Case and Orient Bay is quieter, with better food and a more European feel. Since the island is small, either base lets you explore both easily by car.
When is the best time to visit St. Maarten?
December to April is the driest and busiest, with the highest prices and most cruise ships. May, June and early July offer warm weather, calmer beaches and better rates. September and October are the wettest and riskiest months for hurricanes, and many restaurants close for annual maintenance. Book well ahead if you travel over Christmas or New Year.
Is Maho Beach worth visiting?
Yes, at least once. Standing on the sand as an airliner passes overhead on final approach is genuinely thrilling and unlike anywhere else. Check the day's arrivals board so you catch the larger wide-body flights, usually in the early afternoon. Never stand behind the jet blast fence during departures, which has caused serious injuries in the past.
Is St. Maarten expensive?
Prices sit mid-range for the Caribbean, with real flexibility. French-side bistros and Dutch resort restaurants can be costly, but lolo barbecue shacks, bakeries and supermarkets keep food affordable. Budget around $110 to $220 a day for mid-range travel. Duty-free shopping in Philipsburg is genuinely cheap for spirits, jewellery and electronics.
Do you need a car in St. Maarten?
It is the easiest way to get around and rentals are relatively cheap. Buses are inexpensive but limited in the evenings, and taxis add up fast if you move between the two sides often. Driving is on the right, distances are short, and the main challenges are traffic around Simpson Bay's bridge openings and finding parking in Philipsburg and Grand Case.
