Taichung, Taiwan: Guia de viagem
Taiwan's mildest big city: bubble tea's birthplace, night markets and Sun Moon Lake.
- Melhor época: October-April
- Orçamento diário: $35 to $95 USD
- Duração ideal: 2 to 3 days
Taichung has the best weather in Taiwan and the most relaxed pace of its big cities. It is where bubble tea was invented, and the drink culture still shows in a cafe on nearly every block. Add the Miyahara ice-cream palace in an old eye hospital, the sprawling Fengjia night market, and Sun Moon Lake and Alishan within reach, and it earns two or three days rather than the transit stop most people give it. Joy Plus balances city and mountain.

Como se deslocar
High-speed rail from Taipei takes about an hour to HSR Taichung station, then a free shuttle or the green-line metro into town. The single metro line plus frequent buses covers most of the city, and EasyCard taps work on everything with the first 10km of bus travel free. Scooter and bike rental are easy, and Sun Moon Lake is a two-hour bus from Gancheng station.
Segurança
Taiwan is very safe and Taichung is no exception; the main hazards are traffic and scooters at junctions, so cross carefully. Typhoons can hit between July and October, closing mountain roads to Alishan and Sun Moon Lake. Summer heat and humidity are heavy, so plan outdoor time for morning or evening. Tap water is best boiled or filtered, which every hotel provides.
Perguntas frequentes
Is Taichung worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you like food and a slower pace. It has Taiwan's best weather, the birthplace of bubble tea, the country's largest night market, a strong design and cafe scene, and easy access to Sun Moon Lake and the coast. Two days is enough to see why people rate it above Taipei for daily living.
How many days do you need in Taichung?
Two days for the city itself: one for the West District, Calligraphy Greenway and Miyahara, one for Rainbow Village, Gaomei Wetlands at sunset and Fengjia Night Market. Add a third day for Sun Moon Lake, or a fourth if you want to continue up to Alishan or Cingjing.
How do you get from Taipei to Taichung?
High-speed rail takes about 50 to 70 minutes and costs roughly $22 USD, arriving at HSR Taichung in Wuri with a free shuttle or metro link into the centre. Regular TRA trains take 2 to 3 hours for about half the price and stop at the more central Taichung station. Buses take around 2.5 hours and are cheapest.
What is Taichung famous for?
Bubble tea, which was invented at Chun Shui Tang in the 1980s, plus sun cakes, the enormous Fengjia Night Market, the Miyahara ice-cream hall, Rainbow Village and the National Taichung Theater. It is also the usual base for Sun Moon Lake and the mountain routes inland.
When is the best time to visit Taichung?
October to April, when it is dry and mild, with the winter months especially comfortable compared with the rest of Taiwan. Summer is hot and humid, and the typhoon window from July to October can disrupt mountain trips. Cherry blossom appears in the hills around February and March.
Can you visit Sun Moon Lake from Taichung?
Yes, it is the standard day trip. Nantou Bus route 6670 runs from Taichung's Gancheng station in about two hours, or from the HSR station in around 90 minutes. Once there, a boat pass, the ropeway and the lakeside cycle path fill a day. Staying overnight is better for sunrise on the water.
Is Taichung expensive?
Less than Taipei. Hostel beds run about $15 to $20 USD, mid-range hotels $50 to $90, and night-market meals $2 to $5 while restaurant dinners are $10 to $20. Metro and bus fares are low and the first 10km of bus travel is free with an EasyCard. Budget travellers manage on $35 to $45 a day.
