Taos, USA: Guia de viagem
Adobe, high desert light and a thousand-year-old pueblo
- Melhor época: September-October and January-March for ski
- Orçamento diário: $140 to $230
- Duração ideal: 3 to 4 days
Taos sits at 7,000 feet in northern New Mexico, where the desert meets the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Taos Pueblo has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years. Artists came for the light in the early 1900s and never left. In winter it becomes a serious ski town; the rest of the year it is galleries, hot springs, green chile and some of the clearest night skies in the country.
Bairros
- Taos Plaza: The historic centre - adobe storefronts, galleries, the Hotel La Fonda and most restaurants within two blocks.
- Taos Pueblo: A living UNESCO World Heritage community two miles north, open to respectful visitors most of the year.
- Arroyo Seco: A tiny village on the road to the ski valley with ice cream, craft shops and mountain views.
- Taos Ski Valley: Twenty minutes up the canyon - steep terrain in winter, hiking to Wheeler Peak in summer.
O que fazer
- Taos Pueblo: Multi-storey adobe dwellings built before 1400 and still lived in. Guided visits support the community; photography rules are strict and closures happen for ceremonies.
- Rio Grande Gorge Bridge: A 565-foot drop straight below the walkway, ten miles west of town. Go at sunset.
- Earthship Biotecture: A neighbourhood of off-grid houses built from tyres and bottles, with a self-guided visitor centre.
- Millicent Rogers Museum: The best collection of Navajo and Pueblo jewellery, pottery and Hispanic devotional art in the region.
- Ojo Caliente or Blackrock hot springs: Mineral soaking, either resort-polished or free and wild beside the Rio Grande.
Segredos escondidos
- San Francisco de Asis Church in Ranchos de Taos, painted by O'Keeffe and photographed by Adams.
- The Rio Grande del Norte overlook picnic areas - empty, enormous views.
- Taos Mesa Brewing's outdoor stage on a summer night.
- The D.H. Lawrence Ranch, free and rarely busy, up a dirt road in San Cristobal.
O que comer
- Green chile on everything - ask for Christmas to get both colours
- Blue corn enchiladas at a Plaza institution
- Sopaipillas with honey
- Breakfast burritos, the standard Taos fuel
- Posole and carne adovada in winter
Como se deslocar
You need a car. Taos is 2.5 hours from Albuquerque and 1.5 from Santa Fe on a beautiful drive. In town parking is easy; the Chile Line shuttle runs a limited loop. Winter roads to the ski valley can require snow tyres.
Segurança
Safe and low-crime. The real risks are altitude - drink water, take the first day easy - and intense sun. Respect Pueblo rules absolutely: no photos of ceremonies, no entering restricted areas.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in Taos?
Three days is the sweet spot: one for the Pueblo and town, one for the Gorge Bridge and Earthships, one for hot springs or hiking. Ski trips work better at four or more.
Can you visit Taos Pueblo?
Yes, most of the year during daytime hours for a per-person fee. It closes for roughly ten weeks in late winter and for ceremonial days, so check before driving out. Photography permits and strict etiquette apply.
What is the best time to visit Taos?
September and October for warm days, golden aspens and clear skies. January to March for skiing. Late spring is windy, and July brings afternoon monsoon storms.
Is Taos or Santa Fe better?
Santa Fe has more restaurants, museums and hotels. Taos is smaller, wilder and closer to mountains and the Pueblo. Many travellers do both - they are 90 minutes apart on the High Road.
Do you need a car in Taos?
Yes. The Pueblo, gorge, hot springs and ski valley are all several miles apart with minimal public transport. The nearest major airport is Albuquerque, 2.5 hours away.
Is Taos affected by altitude?
Town sits near 7,000 feet and the ski valley tops 11,000. Expect shortness of breath on day one. Drink extra water, go easy on alcohol and avoid strenuous hikes for the first 24 hours.
Is Taos expensive?
Moderate. Budget $140 to $230 a day for a mid-range hotel, meals and a car. Ski season and autumn weekends push lodging up sharply; shoulder months are much cheaper.
