Ushuaia, Argentina: Guia de viagem

The end of the world. Snow-capped peaks, Beagle Channel cruises, and the gateway to Antarctica.

  • Melhor época: November-March
  • Orçamento diário: $60 to $100 USD
  • Duração ideal: 4 to 6 days

Ushuaia calls itself the end of the world, and it feels like it. Snow-covered Martial Mountains rise directly behind a frontier town of colourful alpine houses, while the Beagle Channel stretches south toward Cape Horn and Antarctica. This is where the Andes finally drown in the Southern Ocean, where penguins waddle onto beaches, and where the last forest on Earth meets the last sea. Joy Plus plans your Ushuaia days around the light, the wildlife schedules and the weather that changes every twenty minutes.

Bairros

  • Centro: The compact town centre with the main street San Martin, restaurants, travel agencies and the port. Functional, walkable and the best base for most visitors.
  • Barrio Almirante Brown: A quieter residential area uphill from the centre with better views of the channel and a more local atmosphere.
  • Puerto: The port district where cruise ships and expedition vessels dock. Lively during the summer season, quiet in winter.

O que fazer

  • Beagle Channel boat tour: A half-day cruise past sea lion colonies, the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, and islands covered in cormorants and penguins. Bring layers, it is cold even in summer.
  • Hike in Tierra del Fuego National Park: The Coastal Trail and Laguna Esmeralda are the two best day hikes. One follows the shore of the Beagle Channel; the other climbs to a glacier-fed emerald lake.
  • Visit the Maritime Museum and old prison: Housed in the former state penitentiary, this museum covers Ushuaia's history as a penal colony, its maritime past and Antarctic exploration.
  • Ride the End of the World Train: A steam train into the national park following the route of the original convict train. Touristy but the scenery of the Pipo River valley is spectacular.
  • Eat king crab at a waterfront restaurant: Centolla is the local delicacy: enormous southern king crab served grilled, in stews or as ravioli. Bambu and Patagonia Bistro are local favourites.
  • Tierra del Fuego National Park: Hike the trails of the world's southernmost national park, forests, peat bogs, lakes and the Beagle Channel coastline at the literal end of the road.
  • Beagle Channel boat trip: Cruise past sea lion colonies, penguin islands and the iconic Les Éclaireurs lighthouse, the 'End of the World' lighthouse, on the legendary Beagle Channel.

Segredos escondidos

  • The Martial Glacier trail, a steep 3-hour climb from the edge of town to a glacier viewpoint most visitors skip.
  • The small penguin colony at Isla Martillo, accessible by a shorter and cheaper boat trip than the main channel cruises.
  • The old cemetery on the hill above town, with views over the channel and gravestones telling stories of shipwrecks, explorers and immigrants.
  • Winter trekking and dog sledding from June to September, when Ushuaia transforms into a snow sports base with almost no tourists.
  • The craft breweries on San Martin, where Patagonian barley meets Antarctic water for genuinely good local beer.

O que comer

  • Centolla, king crab from the Beagle Channel, the definitive Ushuaia dish, best eaten simply grilled
  • Cordero al palo, Patagonian lamb slow-roasted over an open fire, a regional tradition
  • Merluza negra, black hake from the deep southern waters, served grilled or in rich sauces
  • Chocolates from the artisan shops on San Martin, made with Patagonian cream and very good
  • Mate, the Argentine herbal tea, shared in parks and on hiking trails as a social ritual

Como se deslocar

Ushuaia's centre is small and entirely walkable. Taxis are cheap and reliable for longer distances. Buses run to the national park and the airport. Most excursions, cruises and tours include hotel pickup. The airport is a 15-minute drive from town. Renting a car is useful only if you plan multiple independent trips into the park.

Segurança

Ushuaia is very safe. The main risks are weather-related: sudden temperature drops, strong winds and rapidly changing conditions in the mountains. Always carry waterproof layers, tell someone your hiking route, and check forecasts before setting out. The sun is intense at this latitude, even when cold.
