Varna, Bulgaria: Guia de viagem

Bulgaria's Black Sea capital: sea gardens, Roman baths, gold-age treasure and summer beach clubs.

  • Melhor época: June and September
  • Orçamento diário: $60 to $120 USD
  • Duração ideal: 3 to 4 days

Varna is where Bulgaria goes to the sea: a working port city with an enormous seafront Sea Garden, Roman thermal baths in the middle of downtown, and the world's oldest processed gold in its archaeological museum. Beaches run north to Golden Sands, the summer nightlife is loud and cheap, and cliffs, monasteries and Balchik's palace gardens sit just up the coast.

Bairros

  • Centre (Knyaz Boris I): The pedestrian shopping spine with cafes, the cathedral and the Roman baths nearby.
  • Sea Garden: A vast seafront park of alleys, terraces, the aquarium and the beach below.
  • Chayka & Briz: Residential hillside districts with sea views and calmer stays.
  • Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi): The resort strip 18 km north with the big hotels and summer clubs.
  • Asparuhovo: Across the bridge with a long quiet beach and local seafood spots.

O que fazer

  • Varna Archaeological Museum: See the Varna Necropolis gold, the oldest worked gold ever found.
  • Roman Thermae: Walk through the 2nd-century baths ruins right in the city centre.
  • Sea Garden and the beach: Stroll the park to the aquarium, then drop down to the city sand.
  • Day trip to Balchik: Visit the Romanian queen's palace and its cliffside botanical gardens.

Segredos escondidos

  • Aladzha Monastery, cut into a cliff face in the forest north of the city.
  • The Retro Museum's hall of restored socialist-era cars and wax figures.
  • Pobiti Kamani, a field of natural stone columns 20 km inland.
  • The Naval Museum's torpedo boat Drazki moored on the waterfront.

O que comer

  • Grilled tsatsa, tiny fried Black Sea sprats
  • Shopska salad with white brine cheese
  • Mussels in white wine from the local farms
  • Rakia and Bulgarian Mavrud red wine

Como se deslocar

Varna Airport is 15 minutes from downtown with heavy summer charter and low-cost traffic. The centre and Sea Garden are walkable, city buses are cheap and reach Golden Sands in about 40 minutes, and taxis are inexpensive if metered. Buses run along the coast to Balchik, Kavarna and Nesebar; a car helps for Kaliakra cape and the inland stone forest.

Segurança

Varna is generally safe, with summer petty theft on crowded beaches and around nightlife strips the main risk. Insist on metered taxis or use Maxim and TaxiMe apps, since airport and resort taxis overcharge heavily. Black Sea currents and sudden drop-offs catch swimmers out at unguarded beaches. Golden Sands nightlife can get rowdy in peak season.

Perguntas frequentes

How many days do you need in Varna?

Three days works well: one for the centre, Roman Thermae and the archaeological museum, one for the Sea Garden and beaches, and one for a coastal day trip to Balchik and Cape Kaliakra. Beach-focused trips easily stretch to a week using Varna as a base.

Is Varna worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a real city rather than a pure resort. Varna combines Black Sea beaches with Roman ruins, the world's oldest gold hoard, a huge seafront park and prices well below Mediterranean equivalents. It also makes the best base for the northern Bulgarian coast.

What is Varna famous for?

The Varna Necropolis gold, dated to around 4,500 BC and the oldest processed gold on record; its Sea Garden, the largest park of its kind in the Balkans; the Roman Thermae, the fourth-largest surviving Roman baths in Europe; and the Golden Sands resort strip.

When is the best time to visit Varna?

June and September give warm sea, open beach bars and far fewer crowds than July and August, when Bulgarian and Romanian holidaymakers fill the coast. May and October are pleasant for the city and day trips but too cool for reliable swimming. Winter is quiet with many resort venues closed.

Are the beaches in Varna good?

The city beach below the Sea Garden is convenient but busy and mixed quality. The better sand is north at Golden Sands, Albena and Kranevo, all reachable by bus, or south at Asparuhovo for a quieter local strip. Watch for strong currents and unguarded stretches.

How do you get from Varna to Nesebar or Sunny Beach?

Buses run frequently along the coast and take roughly 2 to 2.5 hours to Nesebar and Sunny Beach, with more services in summer. Driving takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Burgas, a bit further south, is served by both bus and a slow train from Varna.

Is Varna expensive?

No. Budget $60 to $120 a day. A restaurant main costs $7 to $12, beer around $2, museum entry a few dollars, and city apartments are cheap. Prices rise sharply at Golden Sands in July and August, where resort bars charge several times the city rate.
