Xiamen, China: Guia de viagem
Seafront China with colonial Gulangyu, tea houses and the best air in the country.
- Melhor época: October-December, March-May
- Orçamento diário: $45 to $130 USD
- Duração ideal: 3 to 4 days
Xiamen is a subtropical island city on Fujian's coast, famous inside China for its clean air, palm-lined promenades and the piano-obsessed former treaty port of Gulangyu. It reads more like a Mediterranean resort than a mainland metropolis, and the food is some of the best in the south.
Bairros
- Gulangyu Island: Car-free UNESCO island of colonial villas, gardens and piano museums.
- Siming and Zhongshan Road: Old downtown, arcaded shopping street and the ferry terminals.
- Zengcuoan: Former fishing village turned guesthouse and street-food warren by the sea.
- Xiamen University area: Leafy campus, Nanputuo Temple and the start of the coastal ring road.
- Wuyuan Bay: Newer eastern side with wide beaches, sailing and modern hotels.
O que fazer
- Gulangyu island: Take the ferry over and wander the colonial villa lanes before the day crowd lands.
- Huandao coastal road: Cycle or walk the seafront ring road at golden hour.
- Nanputuo Temple: Visit the hillside temple and eat in its well-known vegetarian restaurant.
- Shapowei and Zengcuoan: Browse the old fishing harbour's cafes and the seaside art village.
Segredos escondidos
- Shuzhuang Garden's rock pathways on Gulangyu's quiet southern shore
- Bailuzhou park at night for the skyline reflected in the lake
- The Shapowei fishing harbour cafes in old boatyard buildings
- Tianzhushan forest park for a green half-day away from the coast
O que comer
- Shacha noodles, the peanut-and-seafood sauce that defines Xiamen
- Oyster omelette and fried oyster rolls from Zengcuoan stalls
- Peanut soup with youtiao, sweet and traditional at Huangzehe
- Gongfu tea served properly with Anxi tieguanyin oolong
Como se deslocar
The metro covers the main corridors and the BRT is fast and cheap, both payable by Alipay QR. Taxis and Didi are inexpensive. Gulangyu is reached only by ferry from Dongdu terminal for tourists, around 35 yuan return, and must be booked in advance online. The island itself is walk-only.
Segurança
Xiamen is very safe with low crime and heavy CCTV coverage. Practical issues matter more: you need Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign card for almost everything, a VPN set up before arrival for Western apps, and awareness that typhoons hit between July and September, occasionally shutting ferries and flights.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in Xiamen?
Three days is right: one for Gulangyu, one for the coastal road, Nanputuo Temple and Zengcuoan, and one for a Fujian tulou day trip inland. Add a fourth if you want the beaches at Wuyuan Bay or a slower run through the tea areas around Anxi.
Is Gulangyu Island worth visiting?
Yes, though go early. The UNESCO-listed island has hundreds of colonial villas, no cars, and genuinely lovely lanes once you leave the main commercial strip. Day crowds peak between 10am and 4pm, so either take the first ferry or stay overnight on the island and have the streets to yourself.
How do you get to Gulangyu?
Foreign visitors and non-residents use the Dongdu (Xiamen International Cruise Terminal) ferry, not the closer Lundu pier, which is reserved for residents. Tickets cost around 35 yuan return, take 20 minutes, and must be booked online in advance, especially at weekends and during Chinese holidays.
When is the best time to visit Xiamen?
October to December is the best stretch: warm, dry and clear. March to May is pleasant but wetter. Summer is hot, humid and inside the typhoon window from July to September. Avoid the Chinese national holiday in early October and Chinese New Year unless you enjoy queues.
Can you visit the Fujian tulou from Xiamen?
Yes, and it is the standard day trip. The nearest clusters at Yunshuiyao and Tianluokeng are 2.5-3.5 hours each way by road, so a guided day tour at $50 to $80 is the practical option. Staying a night in a tulou guesthouse is far better if you can spare the time.
Do you need a visa to visit Xiamen?
Many nationalities now enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days, and transit visa-free rules also apply at Xiamen Gaoqi airport. Policies change frequently, so verify against the current official list before booking. Otherwise a standard tourist L visa applies.
Is Xiamen expensive?
Mid-range by Chinese standards. Hostels run $15 to $25, business hotels $45 to $80 and Gulangyu boutique stays $90 to $160. Noodle breakfasts cost $2 to $3, seafood dinners $12 to $25, and metro rides under a dollar. Budget around $60 to $80 a day for a comfortable trip including a day tour.
