Zakynthos, Greece: Guia de viagem
Navagio shipwreck cliffs, Blue Caves, and loggerhead turtles in the Ionian.
- Melhor época: May-June and September-October
- Orçamento diário: $100 to $180 USD
- Duração ideal: 5 to 7 days
Zakynthos, or Zante, is the Ionian island of impossible turquoise. Navagio's shipwreck cove under white cliffs is one of Europe's most photographed beaches, the Blue Caves glow at dawn, and the protected bay of Laganas is a nesting ground for loggerhead turtles. Away from the party strips, the island is green, mountainous and full of quiet villages. Joy Plus separates the two Zakynthos so you get the one you came for.
Bairros
- Zakynthos Town: The Venetian-rebuilt capital: Solomos Square, waterfront tavernas, and the ferry port.
- Laganas: The party strip, but also the marine park protecting nesting loggerhead turtles.
- Tsilivi / Alykes: Calmer east-coast family resorts with sandy, shallow beaches.
- Volimes / Northwest: Mountain villages near the Navagio viewpoint and Blue Caves boat departures.
- Keri / Southwest: Cliffs, sea caves, and the departure point for quieter west-coast boat trips.
O que fazer
- Navagio Shipwreck Beach: Reach the cove by boat, and see it from the clifftop platform at golden hour.
- Blue Caves by boat: Morning light turns the sea electric blue inside the northern sea arches.
- Turtle-spotting in Laganas Bay: Join a licensed, low-impact boat trip in the national marine park.
- Keri cliffs at sunset: Watch the sun fall into the Ionian from the island's southwest lighthouse.
Segredos escondidos
- Xigia beach, where natural sulphur springs make the water milky and cool.
- Porto Limnionas, a rocky west-coast fjord-like swimming cove with one taverna.
- The abandoned village of Old Volimes and the mountain roads around it.
- Askos Stone Park, a hillside nature reserve with native animals and dry-stone walls.
O que comer
- Ladotyri Zakynthou, the island's olive-oil-cured sheep cheese
- Sofigado, a slow-cooked veal and garlic stew
- Fresh grilled fish and octopus at a Keri or Limni Keriou taverna
- Mandolato, the local soft nougat with almonds and honey
Como se deslocar
Zakynthos International Airport is 10 minutes from the capital, with summer charters from across Europe and connections via Athens. Ferries run from Kyllini on the mainland and, in season, to Kefalonia. Buses (KTEL) connect the main resorts to town but run infrequently and rarely serve viewpoints. A hire car or scooter is the practical answer, though northwest mountain roads are narrow and steep. Boat trips leave from Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos and Keri.
Segurança
The island is safe, with the main risks tied to the sea and the roads. Navagio's clifftop platform has had rockfall closures, so obey barriers, and the cove itself can close in swell. Rent a quad or scooter only with proper experience, as accidents are the leading cause of visitor injury. In Laganas Bay, respect marine park rules: no motorboats in restricted zones, no touching turtles and no beach umbrellas in nesting sand.
Perguntas frequentes
How many days do you need in Zakynthos?
Five to seven days lets you see both sides of the island. Plan one day for the Navagio and Blue Caves boat trip, one for a southern turtle and sea-cave cruise from Keri, one for the mountain villages and west-coast viewpoints, and the rest for beaches. A four-day trip covers the headline sights if the weather cooperates.
When is the best time to visit Zakynthos?
May, June, September and early October give warm seas, reliable boat sailings and far fewer crowds than peak season. July and August are hot, busy and expensive, though that is when nightlife peaks. Many resorts and boat operators close between November and April, so an out-of-season trip is quiet but limited.
Can you still visit Navagio Shipwreck Beach?
Access changes year to year because of cliff erosion. Boat landings on the sand have been suspended in some seasons and permitted in others, while the clifftop viewing platform has also closed for safety work. Book with an operator that confirms the current status, and treat the viewpoint as the guaranteed option and a landing as a bonus.
Where do you see turtles in Zakynthos?
In Laganas Bay, part of the National Marine Park, where loggerhead turtles nest between late May and August. Licensed glass-bottom boats from Laganas and Keri look for them feeding in the bay, best in early morning. Ethical rules matter: never touch or chase a turtle, avoid nesting beaches at night and choose operators that follow marine park limits.
Is Zakynthos just a party island?
No. The nightlife reputation comes almost entirely from one strip in Laganas and part of Argassi. The rest of the island is mountainous, green and quiet, with village tavernas, olive groves and low-key coves like Porto Limnionas and Xigia. Base yourself in Keri, Volimes, Alykes or Zakynthos Town and you will barely notice the party scene.
Do you need a car in Zakynthos?
It helps a great deal. Buses connect the capital with the main resorts but not the northwest viewpoints, Keri cliffs or the mountain villages, and services thin out in the evening. A small hire car is inexpensive and gives you flexibility around the boat trip schedule. Roads are paved but narrow and winding in the hills, so drive slowly.
Is Zakynthos expensive?
It is mid-priced for a Greek island: cheaper than Santorini or Mykonos and slightly more than the mainland. Around $100 to $180 a day covers a comfortable room, car hire, tavernas and a boat trip. Costs spike in August. Eating at village tavernas rather than resort strips and booking boat tours locally rather than through hotels saves noticeably.
