Amsterdam, Netherlands travel guide

Canals, bikes, brown cafés, and one of the best museum cities in Europe.

  • Best time to visit: April-June (tulip season) and September
  • Average daily budget: $130 to $210 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 3 to 5 days

Amsterdam is the perfect long weekend. Tiny enough to walk in a day, dense enough that every canal corner is photogenic, and home to three of Europe's best museums within 10 minutes of each other. Joy Plus skips the Red Light tour bus circuit and routes you through the neighbourhoods Amsterdammers actually live in.

Amsterdam itinerary

Day 1, Get oriented

Morning: Rijksmuseum first thing on a weekday. Book 9am entry. Have Vermeer's Milkmaid almost to yourself.

Afternoon: Explore Jordaan, The classic Amsterdam picture: narrow houses, hidden courtyards, brown cafés.

Evening: Anne Frank House at 9pm. Late-night slots are easier to get and far less crowded.

Day 2, Go deeper

Morning: Bike from Vondelpark to the Jordaan. Rent at MacBike. The city makes sense the moment you're on a bike.

Afternoon: Explore De Pijp, Multicultural, foodie, the Albert Cuyp Market on weekday mornings.

Evening: Sunset canal cruise from Westerdok. Skip the big boats. Take a small electric one with 8 people max.

Day 3, Hidden side

Morning: Rent a bike and ride like a local. Amsterdam runs on two wheels. Rent a city bike, stick to the right, signal with your arm, and loop the canal ring out to Vondelpark, the single best way to feel the city's rhythm.

Afternoon: Explore Oost, Up-and-coming, big parks, brewery scene.

Evening: Canal-side picnic in the Jordaan. Grab cheese, bread and a stroopwafel from a market, then post up on a canal bench in the Jordaan. Quiet streets, houseboats and gabled houses, the prettiest, most local quarter.

Getting around

Bike. Always bike. Rent for $10-15/day. Trams cover the rest. The metro is mostly for the airport. Avoid driving - parking is brutal and the city is built for two wheels.

Safety

Very safe. The biggest risk is a tram or a bike hitting you - look both ways twice. Standard pickpocket awareness in Centraal Station and on tram lines 2 and 5.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Amsterdam?

Three days is enough for the highlights. Five lets you slow down, do a day trip to Haarlem or the Keukenhof tulip gardens (April-May), and explore Noord properly.

Is Amsterdam expensive?

Yes, more than most of Europe. Hotels start around $180/night in the centre. Eating out is $25-50 per person. Museums $15-25. Bike rental and walking keep transport costs near zero.

Do I need to book museums in advance?

Yes - especially Anne Frank House (often sold out 6+ weeks ahead) and Van Gogh Museum. Rijksmuseum is more flexible but skip-line tickets save 30+ minutes in season.

Where should I stay in Amsterdam?

Jordaan for the most photogenic canals and quiet evenings. De Pijp for foodies and nightlife. Centrum if you want everything walking-distance. Avoid the Red Light District unless you want noisy stag-do streets until 4am.

Is Amsterdam safe at night?

One of Europe's safest capitals. The biggest risk is being hit by a tram or a cyclist - always look both ways twice when crossing the bike lane. Pickpockets work Centraal Station and tram lines 2 and 5; keep phones zipped on busy routes.

Can you visit Amsterdam without a car?

Absolutely - and you should. The city is fully walkable in 90 minutes end-to-end, trams reach everywhere, and a rented bike (€10-15/day) is the local default. Skip the car: parking is €7+/hour and the canal-ring streets are one-way mazes.

Do I need to book the Anne Frank House in advance?

Yes, absolutely. Tickets are sold online only, on a timed-entry basis, and release a few weeks ahead before selling out fast. There's no walk-up line, so book the moment your dates open.

Is Amsterdam expensive?

Yes, on par with other Western European capitals. Hotels and central restaurants hit hardest; save by biking instead of taxis, eating at brown cafés and markets, and using a museum card if you'll visit several.

Is Amsterdam walkable and easy to navigate?

Very. The compact canal ring is best on foot or bike, with trams filling the gaps. Just watch for cyclists, never wander into the bike lane, and mind the narrow, railing-free canal edges.
