Bali, Indonesia travel guide
The world's most-loved digital-nomad island - if you know which side to stay on.
- Best time to visit: April-October (dry season)
- Average daily budget: $40 to $90 USD
- Ideal trip length: 10 to 14 days
Bali is really four trips in one - Canggu's surf-and-coworking vibe, Ubud's jungle and yoga, the Bukit's cliffside beaches, and the islands east. Joy Plus splits your days across them so you don't burn 4 hours a day in scooter traffic.
Bali is the world's most-loved island, and it's also the most misunderstood. The mistake nine out of ten first-time visitors make is staying in one place, usually Seminyak or Kuta, and trying to day-trip everywhere else. By the time they've done a 4-hour scooter ride to Ubud and back, they've decided Bali is overrated. The locals shake their heads. The trick is to move every 3 to 4 days, base yourself in three regions, and let each one have its own rhythm.
Bali is also the easiest country in Asia for solo travel. Hostels are cheap (rooms from $8), the local population speaks excellent tourist English, and the Australian-Indonesian-European nomad community is large enough that you'll never eat dinner alone unless you want to. The Indonesian B211A visit visa now allows up to 6 months on-island, and the new Second Home Visa makes 5-10 year stays possible.
What everyone underestimates is the diversity. Canggu is half nomad cafés, half rice paddies. Ubud is jungle, yoga and warungs you'll dream about for years. The Bukit (Uluwatu) is cliffside beach clubs and world-class surf. Sidemen and Munduk in the highlands are the Bali your parents went to in 1995, quiet, untouched, no influencers. Nusa Penida is jaw-dropping cliffs and one of the world's best day-trip beaches. Doing all five regions in two weeks is genuinely possible, and the Joy Plus AI plan stages the moves so each base only needs short rides.
This guide is the 14-day plan we'd give a friend. It assumes you can ride a scooter (or are willing to use Grab + private drivers), can handle 28-32°C and afternoon humidity, and want a real Bali, not just smoothie bowls and Instagram swings.

Getting there
Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) is on the Bukit peninsula, 30 min from Canggu, 90 min from Ubud, 25 min from Uluwatu. Avoid the official airport taxi mafia, pre-book a transfer through your hotel or use the Grab/Gojek pickup point at the parking garage (350m walk from arrivals). Transfer to Canggu: 250,000 IDR. To Ubud: 400,000 IDR. To Uluwatu: 200,000 IDR.
Getting around
Rent a scooter ($5/day) - but only if you're confident. Wear a real helmet, get an International Driving Permit (police checks happen), and never ride without travel insurance. Otherwise, GoJek and Grab cars are cheap and air-conditioned, but banned in some areas (Ubud centre, Canggu's main strips) due to local taxi mafias. Drivers can be hired by the day for $40-50. Don't try to drive Canggu → Ubud during rush hour (5-7pm) unless you enjoy 90-minute crawls.
Safety
Bali is generally very safe. The biggest risks are scooter accidents (wear a helmet, get travel insurance, Bali is the world's #1 travel-insurance claim destination), stomach bugs in the first week (drink only sealed water and ice from cafés, not warungs), and Bali belly. Solo travel is extremely common here, solo female travellers report Bali as one of Asia's easiest destinations. Watch for monkey theft at Uluwatu temple and sacred sites.
Solo travel tips
- Stage your accommodation by region: Don't base yourself in one spot and day-trip. 4 nights Canggu → 4 nights Ubud → 3 nights Uluwatu → 3 nights Sidemen is the optimal 14-day flow.
- Don't rent a scooter on day one: Get used to Bali traffic from a Grab car for 48 hours. Then rent a scooter from a reputable place (not the hotel) and start with quiet streets.
- Hostel pick: Tribal Bali (Canggu) or Onehouse Hostel (Ubud): Both run social events without forcing pub crawls. Mixed solo and small-group crowd, real common spaces, decent wifi.
- Solo female travellers: Bali is one of Asia's safest destinations for women alone. Standard rules apply: zero tolerance for groping at clubs, share Grab rides, avoid Kuta as a base.
- Find your tribe at yoga, surf, coworking: Yoga drop-ins at The Yoga Barn (Ubud) and Samadi (Canggu) attract solos. Outpost coworking has a dedicated solo-traveller community channel.
- Get travel insurance, really: Scooter accidents are Bali's #1 medical issue. World Nomads, Safety Wing or HeyMondo cover scooter rides if you have a valid licence/IDP.
Cultural etiquette
- Sarong + sash required at every temple, buy one for 75,000 IDR or rent for 20,000 IDR at the gate.
- Don't enter temples or step over offerings (canang sari) on sidewalks.
- Use your right hand to give or receive things, left is considered unclean.
- Tipping isn't expected but is appreciated, 10-15% at sit-down restaurants, round up Grabs.
- Topless and nude sunbathing are illegal, even on remote beaches.
- Public displays of affection are frowned upon outside touristy zones.
- Don't argue or raise your voice, Balinese culture deeply avoids confrontation.
- On Nyepi (Day of Silence, March), the entire island shuts down for 24 hours, no flights, no lights, no leaving your hotel.
