Brno, Czech Republic travel guide

Czechia's second city: functionalist architecture, cheap beer and a student pulse Prague lost.

  • Best time to visit: May-June and September
  • Average daily budget: $70 to $130 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days

Brno is Prague without the queues: a Moravian university city where Bauhaus-era villas sit above a compact old town, cafes run late, and half a litre of Pilsner still costs a couple of dollars. Villa Tugendhat is a UNESCO landmark of modernist design, the Spilberk fortress looms over the rooftops, and the bone-lined ossuary beneath St James is the second largest in Europe.

Getting around

Brno has a small airport but most arrivals come by train: 2.5 hours from Prague, 90 minutes from Vienna and about 2 hours from Bratislava. The centre is entirely walkable, and an excellent tram and trolleybus network covers everything beyond it with cheap short-hop tickets. Regional trains reach the Moravian wine towns in under an hour, so a car is rarely necessary.

Safety

Brno is safe and low-crime, with pickpocketing rare and mostly limited to the main station area, which feels rough late at night. Trams move fast and quietly, so check both ways on shared streets. Student nightlife is boisterous but good-natured. Winter pavements ice over, and the old town cobbles are hard going with wheels or limited mobility.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Brno?

Two days is enough for the city: one for the old town, cathedral, ossuary and Špilberk, and one for Villa Tugendhat, the Mendel Museum and the cafe scene. Add a third day for a Moravian wine trip to Mikulov, Valtice or Lednice by train.

Is Brno worth visiting?

Yes, especially if Prague feels overrun. Brno has UNESCO-listed modernist architecture, a genuine student-driven cafe and bar culture, prices roughly a third lower than the capital, and Moravian wine country an hour away. It rewards travellers who like cities that are lived in rather than performed.

What is Brno famous for?

Villa Tugendhat and interwar functionalist architecture, the ossuary under St James with over 50,000 sets of remains, Špilberk Castle, Gregor Mendel's genetics experiments at the Augustinian abbey, the MotoGP circuit, and some of the cheapest good beer in Europe.

When is the best time to visit Brno?

May, June and September bring warm days and full terrace season without summer heat. Late September is the grape harvest in south Moravia. Winter is cold but the Christmas markets on Freedom Square are excellent and hotels are cheap. Avoid MotoGP weekend in August unless you have booked ahead.

How do you get from Prague to Brno?

Direct trains run at least hourly and take about 2.5 hours, with RegioJet and České dráhy both cheap when booked ahead. Buses take a similar time for less money. Driving is roughly 2 hours on the D1 motorway, which is often congested near Prague.

Do you need to book Villa Tugendhat in advance?

Yes. Tours are limited to small groups and typically sell out three to eight weeks ahead, especially the extended tour that includes the technical basement. Book online the moment your dates are fixed. If it is full, the garden can still be visited and other functionalist villas are open.

Is Brno expensive?

No, it is one of the better-value cities in Central Europe. Budget $70 to $130 a day. Beer runs about $2, a pub meal $8 to $12, museum entry is a few dollars, and central hotels cost far less than Prague or Vienna equivalents outside major event weekends.
