Buffalo, United States travel guide

Great Lakes city of Gilded Age architecture, chicken wings and Niagara on the doorstep.

  • Best time to visit: June-September
  • Average daily budget: $120 to $230 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days

Buffalo was once the eighth-largest city in America, and the money left behind an architectural collection few cities can match: Frank Lloyd Wright houses, Louis Sullivan's Guaranty Building, an Olmsted park system and a grain elevator skyline that inspired European modernists. The waterfront at Canalside has been rebuilt, the chicken wing was invented here in 1964, and Niagara Falls is 30 minutes up the road.

Getting around

A car helps for the Wright houses and Niagara, though downtown, Canalside and Allentown are walkable and the Metro Rail runs free above ground along Main Street. Rideshares are cheap and plentiful. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is 20 minutes east, about $25 to $35 by rideshare. Winter driving means lake-effect snow that can drop a foot in hours.

Safety

Downtown, Elmwood, Allentown and Canalside are comfortable day and night, with normal city awareness on the East Side and after last call. The real hazard is weather: lake-effect snow can bury roads with little warning between November and March, and wind chill off Lake Erie is brutal. Check travel bans before driving in winter, and dress in layers year-round because lakefront evenings stay cool.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Buffalo?

Two to three. One day for architecture, the Martin House and the Buffalo AKG museum, one for Canalside, Silo City and the wing trail, and a third for Niagara Falls, which sits 30 minutes north and easily fills a day.

When is the best time to visit Buffalo?

June to September, when it is 22-28C, the waterfront programming runs daily and Niagara is in full flow. Autumn brings excellent colour in the Olmsted parks. Winter is long, grey and famous for lake-effect snow, though Canalside turns into an ice rink.

Is Buffalo expensive?

No, it is one of the best-value cities in the Northeast at $120 to $230 a day. Hotels run $110 to $190, wings and a beer cost under $20, and the Buffalo AKG is around $20. It is dramatically cheaper than New York City or Boston.

Is Buffalo safe for tourists?

Yes in the visitor areas. Elmwood Village, Allentown, downtown and Canalside are busy and comfortable; use standard urban caution on the East Side and late at night. Winter weather is the bigger risk, as lake-effect storms can close roads within hours.

Is Buffalo a good base for Niagara Falls?

Very good. The American side is 30 minutes by car and hotels cost far less than at the falls themselves, while Buffalo gives you restaurants and museums the falls town lacks. Bring a passport if you want to cross to the Canadian side for the better panorama.

Where were Buffalo wings invented?

At the Anchor Bar on Main Street in 1964, when Teressa Bellissimo fried leftover wings and tossed them in hot sauce and butter. Locals now split between Anchor Bar for the history and Duff's for the heat, and both are worth doing.

What is Buffalo known for?

Chicken wings, beef on weck, Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House, Louis Sullivan's Guaranty Building, the Olmsted park system, grain elevators, the Bills and Sabres, lake-effect snow and proximity to Niagara Falls.
