Hidden gems

  • Buffalo City Hall's free observation deck, a 1931 art deco tower with the best skyline view.
  • The Richardson Olmsted Campus, a vast Romanesque former asylum turned hotel.
  • Forest Lawn Cemetery, an Olmsted-era landscape with President Fillmore's grave.

Getting around

A car helps for the Wright houses and Niagara, though downtown, Canalside and Allentown are walkable and the Metro Rail runs free above ground along Main Street. Rideshares are cheap and plentiful. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is 20 minutes east, about $25 to $35 by rideshare. Winter driving means lake-effect snow that can drop a foot in hours.

Safety

Downtown, Elmwood, Allentown and Canalside are comfortable day and night, with normal city awareness on the East Side and after last call. The real hazard is weather: lake-effect snow can bury roads with little warning between November and March, and wind chill off Lake Erie is brutal. Check travel bans before driving in winter, and dress in layers year-round because lakefront evenings stay cool.
