Cardiff, Wales travel guide

A castle in the city centre, Victorian arcades and a waterfront that turns into one giant match-day party.

  • Best time to visit: May-September, plus Six Nations weekends
  • Average daily budget: $95 to $170 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days

Cardiff is one of Britain's easiest city breaks: a medieval castle at the top of the high street, seven Victorian arcades full of independents, and a redeveloped bay ten minutes away by bike. It is also the loudest sports city in the UK when Wales play at the Principality Stadium. Joy Plus builds a Cardiff plan that pairs the compact centre with the coast and the Brecon Beacons.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable, and the bay is a 40-minute walk, 10-minute train from Cardiff Queen Street or a short Nextbike ride. Local trains reach Caerphilly in 20 minutes and Barry Island in 35. Cardiff Central connects to Bristol in under an hour and London Paddington in about two.

Safety

Cardiff is generally safe and the centre is well lit and busy. The main issue is heavy drinking around St Mary Street on weekends and after rugby internationals, when the area gets rowdy rather than dangerous. Watch bags in crowded arcades and on match days, and avoid quiet stretches of the Taff path alone late at night.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Cardiff?

Two days is enough for the castle, the arcades, the bay and St Fagans. A third day lets you get out to Caerphilly Castle, the Gower or a walk in the Brecon Beacons, which is where Wales really opens up.

Is Cardiff worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you want a cheap, compact British city break. You get a genuine castle in the centre, free world-class museums, a waterfront and easy access to mountains and coast, all at noticeably lower prices than London or Edinburgh.

Is Cardiff expensive?

It is one of the better-value UK cities. Around 95 to 120 dollars a day covers a decent hotel outside match weekends, meals out and transport. National Museum Cardiff and St Fagans are both free, which keeps sightseeing costs low.

What is the best time to visit Cardiff?

May to September for the weather and outdoor events. Six Nations weekends between February and March are electric but hotels sell out and prices can triple, so book months ahead or deliberately avoid those dates.

How do you get from Cardiff to the Brecon Beacons?

Drive or take the T4 bus toward Brecon, roughly an hour to the park's southern edge. Without a car, guided day tours from Cardiff are the simplest way to reach Pen y Fan and the waterfall country around Ystradfellte.

Is Cardiff Bay worth the trip?

Yes for a half day. The Wales Millennium Centre, the Norwegian Church, the barrage walk and the waterfront restaurants make an easy afternoon, and the train from Queen Street takes under ten minutes.

Is Cardiff safe for solo travellers?

Yes. It is small, friendly and easy to navigate, and the centre stays busy into the evening. Solo travellers should just be aware that weekend nightlife on St Mary Street gets very drunk, so pick Pontcanna or Cardiff Bay for quieter evenings.
