Hidden gems

  • Cardiff Market, a two-storey Victorian hall where you can buy cockles and laverbread from the same stall.
  • Insole Court, a Gothic mansion with free gardens and a quiet cafe in Llandaff.
  • The Flat Holm boat trip, out to a tiny island in the Bristol Channel.
  • Llandaff Cathedral, a 15-minute bus from town, with Epstein's huge aluminium Christ figure inside.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable, and the bay is a 40-minute walk, 10-minute train from Cardiff Queen Street or a short Nextbike ride. Local trains reach Caerphilly in 20 minutes and Barry Island in 35. Cardiff Central connects to Bristol in under an hour and London Paddington in about two.

Safety

Cardiff is generally safe and the centre is well lit and busy. The main issue is heavy drinking around St Mary Street on weekends and after rugby internationals, when the area gets rowdy rather than dangerous. Watch bags in crowded arcades and on match days, and avoid quiet stretches of the Taff path alone late at night.
