Clearwater, United States travel guide
Award-winning Gulf beach, nightly sunset festival and easy Tampa access.
- Best time to visit: March-May, October-November
- Average daily budget: $150 to $380 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 4 days
Clearwater Beach regularly tops US beach rankings for good reason: three miles of soft white sand, calm Gulf water and sunsets that the whole town turns out for at Pier 60. Behind the beach strip sits a working Florida city with a marine aquarium famous for rescued dolphins, plus Tampa and St. Petersburg within 45 minutes. It is resort Florida without the theme-park sprawl.

Getting around
Fly into Tampa (TPA, 45 minutes) or the smaller St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE, 20 minutes). The Jolley Trolley links the beach, Sand Key and Dunedin cheaply, and Beach Walk makes the strip fully walkable. A car helps for day trips but beach parking is expensive ($3 to $5 an hour) and the causeway jams on weekend afternoons.
Safety
Clearwater is safe and heavily patrolled, including the beach at night. Watch the flag system for rip currents, and check red tide reports before travelling, as algal blooms occasionally cause respiratory irritation and fish kills. Summer brings daily lightning storms, fierce UV and hurricane risk from June to November.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Clearwater Beach?
March to May has warm water, sunshine and manageable crowds, though spring break peaks in March. October and November are quieter with pleasant 25-28C days. Summer is hot, humid and stormy but cheapest for hotels. Winter suits snowbirds: dry and sunny but water around 18-20C.
Is Clearwater Beach really one of the best beaches in the US?
It consistently ranks in national top-beach lists thanks to fine white sand, shallow calm water, lifeguards and the Beach Walk promenade. It is a developed resort beach rather than a wild one, so if you want solitude take the ferry to Caladesi Island instead.
How far is Clearwater from Tampa and Orlando?
Tampa is about 45 minutes by car, St. Petersburg 40 minutes and Orlando roughly two hours. Many visitors combine a few beach days in Clearwater with Tampa's Busch Gardens or an Orlando theme-park stretch.
Is Clearwater Beach good for families?
Yes, it is one of Florida's most family-friendly beaches: gently sloping water, lifeguards, the free nightly Pier 60 festival, the marine aquarium and plenty of mid-range resorts with pools. Sand Key Park is the calmer alternative when the main strip gets busy.
Do you need a car in Clearwater Beach?
Not if you stay on the beach strip, which is walkable and served by the Jolley Trolley to Dunedin and Sand Key. A car is useful for Tampa, Tarpon Springs or Honeymoon Island, but parking on the beach is pricey and the causeway backs up badly on weekends.
What is red tide and does it affect Clearwater?
Red tide is a naturally occurring algal bloom that can appear along Florida's Gulf coast, usually in late summer and autumn. When present it causes coughing, eye irritation and dead fish on the sand. It is patchy and short-lived; check state monitoring maps before and during your trip.
Where can you see dolphins near Clearwater?
Wild bottlenose dolphins are common in the Intracoastal Waterway; sightseeing and sunset cruises leave hourly from the marina with high success rates. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium also cares for rescued dolphins that cannot be released back into the wild.
