Dahab, Egypt travel guide

Sinai's barefoot beach town: the Blue Hole, world-class diving, Bedouin cafes and mountains falling into the Red Sea.

  • Best time to visit: March-May, September-November
  • Average daily budget: $40 to $90 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 4 to 7 days

Dahab is what Sharm El Sheikh was before the resorts: a Bedouin fishing village turned barefoot diving town, where cushioned cafes spill onto the shoreline and the Sinai mountains glow pink behind you. The Red Sea drops to blue within metres of shore, making it one of the world's cheapest and easiest places to dive, freedive or simply float over coral.

Getting around

Sharm El Sheikh airport is 90 minutes south by taxi or shuttle, and Go Bus and East Delta run coaches from Cairo (8 to 10 hours) and Sharm. In town, everything is walkable along the promenade, with tuk-tuks and pickups covering longer hops for 10 to 30 EGP. Dive centres arrange all transport to the Blue Hole, Canyon and Ras Abu Galum.

Safety

Dahab is safe and relaxed, with a strong long-stay expat and digital-nomad community; security checkpoints along the Sinai road are routine. The real risk is diving: the Blue Hole's arch has killed many divers, so never exceed your certification and choose reputable centres. Reef shoes protect against urchins, and the sun and dry heat are intense year-round.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dahab safe to visit?

Yes. Dahab is a long-established, laid-back travel town with a large resident expat community and a low crime rate, and the Sinai road is checkpointed. Travel advisories generally exempt the Sharm-Dahab corridor from wider Sinai warnings. The larger safety issue is diving beyond your certification.

Is the Blue Hole in Dahab dangerous?

Diving the arch at 55 metres is extremely dangerous and has claimed many lives, which is why it's nicknamed the Diver's Cemetery. Recreational diving the Bells route and the shallow rim, and snorkeling above it, are entirely safe with a reputable centre. Never attempt the arch on recreational training.

How many days should you spend in Dahab?

Four to seven days. That allows several dives or a full Open Water course, a Blue Hole day, a Mount Sinai sunrise or Coloured Canyon trip, and genuine downtime in the beach cafes. Many travellers intending three days end up staying three weeks.

When is the best time to visit Dahab?

March to May and September to November, with air temperatures of 25 to 32°C and water around 24 to 27°C. Summer tops 40°C, though the sea stays swimmable and prices fall. Winter days are pleasant at 20 to 23°C but nights are cool and water drops to about 21°C, so bring a thicker wetsuit.

Is Dahab cheap?

Very. Budget $40 to $90 a day. Guesthouse doubles run $15 to $40, beachfront meals $4 to $10, and a fun dive $25 to $35 with equipment. A PADI Open Water course typically costs $300 to $400, among the cheapest anywhere with this quality of reef.

Is Dahab better than Sharm El Sheikh?

For independent travellers, divers and freedivers, yes: Dahab is cheaper, more relaxed and has superb shore diving. Sharm suits those wanting all-inclusive resorts, direct international flights and family facilities. Many people fly into Sharm and transfer to Dahab in 90 minutes.

Can you snorkel in Dahab without diving?

Absolutely. The Lighthouse, Eel Garden, Three Pools and the Blue Hole rim all have healthy coral within a few metres of shore, reachable straight from the beach. Bring or rent reef shoes for the rocky entries, and never stand on the coral.
