Heidelberg, Germany travel guide

A romantic ruined castle above a baroque old town, on Germany's prettiest stretch of the Neckar.

  • Best time to visit: May-June, September-October
  • Average daily budget: $120 to $230 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 days

Heidelberg is the Germany of the romantic imagination: a half-ruined red sandstone castle looking down on a baroque old town that survived the war intact, with the Old Bridge arching over the Neckar and forested hills on both banks. Home to Germany's oldest university, it has been drawing poets, philosophers and now day-trippers for centuries. Come early or stay the night and the Hauptstrasse belongs to you again.

Heidelberg itinerary

Day 1, Get oriented

Morning: Walk the Philosophenweg. The Philosophers' Walk on the north bank, with the classic postcard view of castle, bridge and old town.

Afternoon: Explore Altstadt, The mile-long baroque old town along Hauptstrasse, with the Marktplatz, student taverns and the Old Bridge.

Evening: Tour Heidelberg Castle. The ruined red sandstone palace, with the Great Tun wine barrel and the terrace view over the rooftops.

Day 2, Go deeper

Morning: Cross the Alte Brücke. The 18th-century Old Bridge, with its baroque gate towers and the brass monkey you rub for luck.

Afternoon: Explore Schlossberg, The castle terrace above the town, reached by funicular or a steep stepped path.

Evening: See the Studentenkarzer. The university's student jail, its walls covered in graffiti by 19th-century undergraduates who treated it as a badge of honour.

Day 3, Hidden side

Morning: Drink at Zum Roten Ochsen. A 300-year-old student tavern of carved benches and beer, essentially unchanged.

Afternoon: Explore Neuenheim, The leafy north bank where locals live, with the Philosophenweg trail and quiet riverside cafés.

Evening: The Thingstätte, a Nazi-era amphitheatre hidden in the woods above the Philosophenweg.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Getting around

The Altstadt is long but flat and entirely walkable; buses and the Bergbahn funicular cover the hill. Frankfurt Airport is 50 minutes by direct bus or about an hour by train via Mannheim. ICE trains reach Frankfurt in an hour and Stuttgart in about 40 minutes from Mannheim. A day ticket on local transport costs around $9.

Safety

Heidelberg is very safe, with the main annoyance being pickpockets in the summer crush on Hauptstrasse and the Old Bridge. The castle path and Philosophenweg are steep and poorly lit after dark, so carry a light or use the funicular. Cyclists on the riverside paths move fast.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Heidelberg?

One full day covers the castle, the Old Bridge, Hauptstrasse and the Philosophers' Walk. Two days lets you slow down for the university museum, the Königstuhl summit and a Neckar valley trip to Neckarsteinach without rushing between them.

Is Heidelberg worth visiting?

Yes. It's the best-preserved romantic old town in western Germany, with a genuinely spectacular castle-and-river setting. It gets busy with day-trippers, but stay overnight and the Altstadt empties out into something far more atmospheric after 6pm.

Is Heidelberg expensive?

Mid-range for Germany: budget $120 to $230 a day. Hotels run $100 to $180, mains $16 to $28 and castle entry with the funicular about $11. Staying in Bergheim or across the river in Neuenheim saves noticeably over Altstadt hotels.

How do you get from Frankfurt to Heidelberg?

The Frankfurt Airport Shuttle bus runs direct in about 50 minutes for roughly $28, or take a train via Mannheim in about an hour from $22. From Frankfurt city centre, trains take 50 to 70 minutes and run several times an hour.

What is Heidelberg famous for?

Its ruined hilltop castle, Germany's oldest university founded in 1386, the Old Bridge over the Neckar, the Philosophers' Walk and its role as the emblem of German Romanticism, immortalised by Goethe, Turner and Mark Twain.

When is the best time to visit Heidelberg?

May to June and September to October for warm days without the July-August coach crowds. Autumn adds gold on the forested hills. The Christmas market in December fills the Marktplatz, and the castle illuminations with fireworks happen three nights each summer.

Is Heidelberg good for solo travellers?

Yes. It's compact, extremely safe and full of international students, so English is universal and drinking alone in a student tavern is completely normal. Walking tours and the hiking trails above town are easy ways to meet other travellers.
