Getting around
Fly into Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV), 45 minutes away, or tiny Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH). A car is easiest for groceries and day trips, but once settled, bikes rule: rentals ($15 to $25/day) and 100km of paths mean many families never drive all week. The free Breeze trolley covers the south island in summer.
Safety
Hilton Head is one of the safest resort islands in the US. Real risks: alligators in every lagoon (never feed, keep kids and dogs back), rip currents (swim near lifeguards at Coligny), summer heat above 33°C, and hurricane season June to November. Bike after dark requires lights, and never leave food on the beach: the turtles and raccoons enforce it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Hilton Head?
April to early June and September to November: warm (22-30°C), swimmable and less crowded. Summer is peak family season with 33°C heat and afternoon storms. Winter is mild (10-18°C), quiet and the best value, though too cool for swimming.
How many days do you need in Hilton Head?
Three days covers the beach, a bike ride, Harbour Town and a dolphin cruise. A full week is the classic family rental pattern, mixing golf, kayaking, Pinckney Island and a day trip to Savannah or Beaufort. The island rewards slow travel over checklists.
Can you really bike on the beach in Hilton Head?
Yes: the sand is so hard-packed that beach biking is the island's signature activity. Ride at low tide when the beach is widest (check tide charts), stick to the firm wet sand near the water, and expect to cover 10-19km easily. Every rental shop has beach cruisers with fat tires.
Is Hilton Head good for families?
It's arguably America's best family beach island: gentle waves, lifeguarded beaches, mini-golf, dolphin cruises, bike paths everywhere and zero high-rise party scene. Coligny Beach Park has a splash pad and changing rooms. Just keep small children away from lagoon edges because of alligators.
Are there alligators in Hilton Head?
Yes, hundreds live in the lagoons and golf course ponds. Attacks on humans are extremely rare, but rules are strict: never feed them, keep 20 meters away, keep dogs on leash away from water edges, and never swim in lagoons. Spotting them from the Pinckney Island trails is a highlight.
Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach: which is better?
Different worlds. Myrtle Beach is high-rise, neon, mini-golf strips and cheaper prices. Hilton Head is low-rise, forested, upscale and quiet, with better beaches, golf and nature but higher costs and less nightlife. Families wanting calm pick Hilton Head; those wanting boardwalk buzz pick Myrtle.
Do you need a car on Hilton Head?
Helpful but not essential. With a bike rental you can reach most beaches, restaurants and shops on the south island via leisure paths. Use a car or rideshare for Sea Pines ($9 entry), Pinckney Island, Bluffton and Savannah day trips. Many visitors park the car on arrival and don't touch it for days.
