Getting around

Fly into Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV), 45 minutes away, or tiny Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH). A car is easiest for groceries and day trips, but once settled, bikes rule: rentals ($15 to $25/day) and 100km of paths mean many families never drive all week. The free Breeze trolley covers the south island in summer.

Safety

Hilton Head is one of the safest resort islands in the US. Real risks: alligators in every lagoon (never feed, keep kids and dogs back), rip currents (swim near lifeguards at Coligny), summer heat above 33°C, and hurricane season June to November. Bike after dark requires lights, and never leave food on the beach: the turtles and raccoons enforce it.
