Kelowna, Canada travel guide

Okanagan wine country on a long blue lake

  • Best time to visit: June to October
  • Average daily budget: $160 to $270
  • Ideal trip length: 3 to 5 days

Kelowna sits on the shore of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia's sunniest valley, surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and dry pine hills. It is Canada's most important wine region, with more than 200 wineries within an hour's drive making everything from crisp Riesling to serious Syrah. Summers are hot and long, so days split naturally between tasting rooms and the lake, where beaches, paddleboards, and boat rentals line the waterfront. In winter the focus shifts uphill to Big White, one of the province's best powder mountains, which makes Kelowna a rare year round base.

Kelowna itinerary

Day 1, Get oriented

Morning: Tour Mission Hill Family Estate. The valley's most dramatic winery, with a bell tower, an amphitheatre, and a terrace restaurant looking out over the lake and vines.

Afternoon: Explore Downtown and the Waterfront, Walkable blocks with breweries, restaurants, and the boardwalk along City Park beach.

Evening: Ride the Myra Canyon trestles. Eighteen restored wooden railway trestles and two tunnels curve around a canyon on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, an easy bike ride with huge views.

Day 2, Go deeper

Morning: Swim and paddle Okanagan Lake. City Park, Gyro Beach, and Bertram Creek all have clean swimming, and paddleboard and boat rentals are easy to arrange in summer.

Afternoon: Explore The Mission, Leafy lakeside district south of downtown with the best swimming beaches and family friendly parks.

Evening: Taste along the Naramata Bench. An hour south, this strip of small family wineries above the lake is the most scenic tasting route in Canada.

Day 3, Hidden side

Morning: Ski or hike Big White. Under an hour from town, with deep powder in winter and alpine hiking and mountain biking in summer.

Afternoon: Explore East Kelowna and the Southeast Slopes, Orchards and hillside wineries with sweeping views back over the lake.

Evening: Knox Mountain at sunset for the best panorama over the city and lake. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Safety

Very safe city. The main risks are sun and heat in summer, wildfire smoke in late summer, and strict drink driving laws, so always book a driver for winery days. Lake water is cold early in the season.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Kelowna?

June to October. July and August bring hot lake weather and busy beaches, while September and October offer harvest season at the wineries, warm days, and fewer crowds. December to March is ski season at Big White.

How many days do you need in Kelowna?

Three to five days. Three covers two winery clusters, a beach day, and the Myra Canyon trestles. Five lets you add the Naramata Bench, Big White, and a boat day on the lake.

Is Kelowna worth visiting for wine?

Yes. The Okanagan is Canada's leading wine region with over 200 wineries nearby, and the quality of Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Syrah competes internationally. Most tasting rooms also have excellent restaurants with vineyard views.

Do you need a car in Kelowna?

For winery touring, yes, unless you book shuttles or guided tours. Downtown, the waterfront, and the beaches are walkable, and rideshares run reliably in town, but the vineyards are spread out.

Where should you stay in Kelowna?

Downtown for walkable dining and the boardwalk, the Mission for the best swimming beaches, and West Kelowna or the southeast slopes for vineyard stays with lake views.

How far is Kelowna from Vancouver?

About four to five hours by car through the Coquihalla Highway, or a one hour flight. Kelowna International Airport also has direct flights from Calgary, Toronto, and Seattle.

Can you swim in Okanagan Lake?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to visit in summer. Water temperatures reach comfortable levels by late June and stay warm into September, with clean public beaches all along the Kelowna shoreline.
