Perth, Australia travel guide
Sun-soaked beaches, the Swan River, and a gateway to wild Western Australia.
- Best time to visit: March-May and September-November
- Average daily budget: $110 to $180 USD
- Ideal trip length: 4 to 5 days
Perth is one of the most isolated cities on earth, and that's the appeal - white-sand beaches with no crowds, the vast Kings Park overlooking the Swan River, and quokka-filled Rottnest Island a short ferry away. It's a city that lives outdoors, with Cottesloe sunsets, riverside cycling and a Fremantle port town full of heritage pubs and markets. Joy Plus plans your days around the ferry to Rottnest, the beach sunsets and the Swan Valley wine region just outside town.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Perth?
Four to five days lets you enjoy the city beaches, a full day on Rottnest Island, Fremantle and a Swan Valley wine trip. Add more if you want to drive to the Pinnacles, Margaret River or the south-west forests, all of which are worthwhile but a few hours away.
Is Perth worth visiting?
Yes - it has some of Australia's best, least-crowded beaches, spectacular Indian Ocean sunsets, the quokka-famous Rottnest Island, historic Fremantle and the Swan Valley wine region. It's relaxed, sunny year-round and a gateway to Western Australia's wild coast and outback.
When is the best time to visit Perth?
Autumn (March-May) and spring (September-November) bring warm, dry, comfortable days. Spring also delivers spectacular wildflowers across WA. Summer (December-February) is hot and dry but excellent for beaches, cooled by the afternoon 'Fremantle Doctor' sea breeze. Winter is mild but the wettest season.
How do I get to Rottnest Island and see the quokkas?
Ferries run from Perth's Barrack Street Jetty, Fremantle and Hillarys Boat Harbour, taking 25 to 90 minutes depending on departure point. The island is car-free, so hire a bike or use the shuttle. Quokkas roam freely, especially around the main settlement - never feed or touch them.
Is Perth too isolated to be worth the trip?
It's one of the world's most remote cities, but that isolation is the appeal - uncrowded beaches, clean air and easy access to wild landscapes. Domestic flights connect it to the eastern capitals in about five hours, and once there everything you need is close and uncrowded.
Do you need a car in Perth?
Not for the city itself - free CAT buses, trains and ferries cover the centre, Fremantle, the beaches and Rottnest. A car becomes useful for the Swan Valley, the Pinnacles and longer trips south to Margaret River. Many visitors hire one only for day trips out of town.
Where's the best beach in Perth?
Cottesloe is the iconic choice for swimming and sunsets, with a café strip behind it. Scarborough is livelier with a pool and surf, City Beach is great for families, and Rottnest's bays - like the Basin and Little Salmon Bay - are the most beautiful for snorkelling.
