Rishikesh, India travel guide
Yoga capital of the world, where the Ganges leaves the Himalaya.
- Best time to visit: September-November, February-April
- Average daily budget: $20 to $70 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 5 days
Rishikesh sits where the Ganges tumbles out of the Himalaya into the plains, and the whole town bends around that river: ashrams and yoga schools on one bank, rafting outfits and cafes on the other, two footbridges strung between them. Mornings are chanting and sun salutations, afternoons are white water or forest waterfalls, evenings are the Ganga Aarti with lamps floating downstream. It is alcohol-free and vegetarian by law, which gives the place an unusually calm rhythm. Joy Plus balances the practice, the rapids and the Himalayan day trips.

Getting around
The core is walkable but hilly, and the two footbridges are the only pedestrian crossings, so pick your bank carefully. Shared autos and vikrams run set routes between the bus stand, Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula for cents. Scooter rental is easy and useful for Neelkanth, Kunjapuri and Shivpuri. Dehradun airport is 35 minutes away and Haridwar station an hour by road.
Safety
The Ganges here is fast and cold with strong undertows, only swim at designated beaches and never after rain. Use a licensed rafting operator with helmets, lifejackets and a safety kayak. Monkeys around the bridges snatch food and bags, keep them closed. Alcohol and meat are banned in town. Solo women generally report Rishikesh as comfortable, but vet ashrams and teacher trainings by recent reviews before paying up front.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Rishikesh?
Three days is enough for the essentials: a morning yoga class, the Beatles Ashram, a rafting run and the evening Ganga Aarti. Stretch to five if you want the Neelkanth and Kunjapuri treks, a day of waterfalls, and a slower ashram routine. Teacher trainings run three to four weeks.
When is the best time to visit Rishikesh?
September to November and February to April. Autumn brings clear Himalayan views after the monsoon, and spring is warm without being punishing. May and June top 40C, and the July-August monsoon closes rafting and makes trails slippery. Winter nights are cold but days are crisp and quiet.
Is Rishikesh good for beginners at yoga?
Yes. Most schools around Tapovan and Laxman Jhula run drop-in beginner hatha classes for a few dollars, and ashrams like Parmarth Niketan include morning practice with a stay. You do not need to book a long retreat, try several teachers for two or three days before committing to anything longer.
Can you raft in Rishikesh and is it safe?
Yes, from roughly late September to June. Standard trips run 9km, 16km or 24km down Grade II-III rapids, and the 16km Shivpuri stretch is the popular one. It is safe with a licensed operator that provides a helmet, lifejacket and safety kayak. No rafting during the monsoon when the river runs too high.
How do you get to Rishikesh from Delhi?
The Dehradun-bound trains from Delhi reach Haridwar in about five hours, then it is a 45-minute taxi. Overnight and day buses run direct in six to seven hours. Fastest is a flight to Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport, 35 minutes from town by taxi. Trains and flights are worth booking a few days ahead.
Is alcohol available in Rishikesh?
No. Rishikesh is a holy city where alcohol and meat are banned, and that applies to restaurants, hotels and shops. Everything is vegetarian, often sattvic. If that matters to you, Haridwar and Dehradun are the nearest places with different rules, but most visitors find the calm is the point.
Is Rishikesh expensive?
No. Guesthouse rooms run $10 to $30 USD, ashram stays with meals often under $15, and cafe meals cost $2 to $5. A 16km rafting trip is roughly $8 to $15 and drop-in yoga classes $3 to $6. Most travellers are comfortable on $25 to $40 a day, less if you stay in an ashram.
