Hidden gems

  • Neer Garh waterfall, a short jungle walk to pools above Laxman Jhula.
  • Kunjapuri Devi temple at sunrise, with a clean Himalayan skyline on clear days.
  • The quiet sand beaches upstream at Shivpuri, empty outside rafting hours.
  • Vashishtha Gufa, a meditation cave 20km upriver where almost no day-trippers go.

Getting around

The core is walkable but hilly, and the two footbridges are the only pedestrian crossings, so pick your bank carefully. Shared autos and vikrams run set routes between the bus stand, Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula for cents. Scooter rental is easy and useful for Neelkanth, Kunjapuri and Shivpuri. Dehradun airport is 35 minutes away and Haridwar station an hour by road.

Safety

The Ganges here is fast and cold with strong undertows, only swim at designated beaches and never after rain. Use a licensed rafting operator with helmets, lifejackets and a safety kayak. Monkeys around the bridges snatch food and bags, keep them closed. Alcohol and meat are banned in town. Solo women generally report Rishikesh as comfortable, but vet ashrams and teacher trainings by recent reviews before paying up front.
